The female of the species.... - 12 June 2008 12:01
Is it one of life's little ironies that society has moved heaven and earth to bring about the end of sexism, yet we are still subjected to areas of life (not entirely) exclusive to women. Take the following examples :

1. Car Insurance aimed at women due to the fact they are less of a risk.
2. Night Club entry at a discounted rate for women, in the desire to attract more men.
3. Gym membership aimed at women.
4. Internet forums supplying sections aimed at female members.

Ladies-only swimming sessions are probably the only example that slightly irritates me.

....just to add.....

The reason I posted this thread, is because I had a leaflet shoved through my front door last night offering "Indian Head Massage", "Back and leg Massage" etc, etc, and at the bottom of the back page, the qualified lady added :

"Please note that I offer my services to female clients only" (or something to that effect).

As a man, I'm feeling as if I'm being victimised far more often because I have external sex organs......

Less likely to have accidents. Fewer pay-outs. Insurance companies deal in risk and statistics. Makes perfect sense.

2. Night Club entry at a discounted rate for women, in the desire to attract more men.

Cunning marketing ploy, eh?

3. Gym membership aimed at women.

My gym only admits men.

4. Internet forums supplying sections aimed at female members.

Take a look at the content of the General section and think about who most of the threads are aimed at.

1. Car Insurance aimed at women due to the fact they are less of a risk.

Statistics show young male drivers to be a higher risk. Why should older / non-male drivers be hit with an increased insurance rate due to these boy racers?

There are also some insurers who gear particular policies to older drivers who statistically prove themselves to be less of a risk, do you consider these to be ageist?

Solution - slow down, drive safer, everyone gets a better deal.

2. Night Club entry at a discounted rate for women, in the desire to attract more men.

If there is any kind of sexism at play with this one it's from the males who the night clubs are trying to attract by ramping up their female punters.

3. Gym membership aimed at women.

Again there are different membership deals aimed at different populations, a deal that fits the needs of a young male won't necessarily meet the needs of a older person / female.

4. Internet forums supplying sections aimed at female members.

Well we may not need a separate forum dedicated toward our female members if the other forums weren't so 'male dominated' or to put it more precisely, so chock full of immature males making sexist comments.

the driving thing is down to anyone seeing a woman driver taking immediate avoiding action and then crashing trying to get away

I suppose it's like concessions being made for children and disabled people, they're less able so need help

and jk2, would your gym seripously turn a woman away??

As stated above, can you not see a possible valid reason for this? do you really consider this business ladies stance to be sexist?

It's a men's gym. There are no women's changing rooms or facilities.

I guess if a woman wanted to train there they'd be legally obliged to allow her. I think. I dunno.

There's a women-only gym just down the road if that makes any difference.

Your points are well presented - although I'm puzzled why you have generalised all male members who frequent the General section in this manner ? (Relating to point 4).

Have you ever come across something similar that had "men only clients" ?

Other than the fact that she would feel uncomfortable giving a man a shoulder or head massage ? Why - I don't know - as I'm guessing she would have trained and qualified in her profession by performing her skills on both men and women.

i find the one about car insurance interesting,

there must be data on different races and accidents and it will be almost certainly not be the same for them all (law of chance) therefore maybe they should introduce different prices for different races of people also?

Um, the 'laws of chance' would suggest that the accident rate would be the same.

When I trained at my uni gym they used to have ladies only days a couple of times a year where men weren't allowed in the complex. It used to infuriate me. In fact it still does now!
