'Friends' who owe you money - 12 June 2008 20:32
I lent a 'mate' £80 last week and he promised it me the next day. Tomorrow it will have been a week. He's ignoring me, constantly. Wont pick up the phone, cuts my calls off etc. I even txt him saying if he hasn't got it then not to worry and just let me know, but please do let me know as i was good enough to lend it so be good enough yourslef to be honest. Still ignoring me.

Ive got a hell of alot of crap going on in my life at the moment but as petty as it sounds i'm absolutley raging, it's on my mind 24/7 and is eating away at me to do something. The is the icing on the cake for me and i'm seeing red constantly. He's clearly made a point of ruining our freindship so i know if i go round his flat i'll end up putting my foot through the door and then choke the skinny runt until he's purple.

Do i go around and make a nuisance of myself or write off the friendship and chuckle at the fact that i'm not even worth £80?

As they say.... if you lend a friend £100 and you never hear from him again then that's probably the best £100 you've ever spent.

I generally give myself 2 rules:

Avoid lending mates money (unless of paramount importance)
Never lend money I can't afford to lose

Mate, this is something i have been through myself, I leant my mate money and he always payed me back, but the last occation he didn't, it was for the £50, long story short, he kept avoiding me too, the thing was from my point of view it was the principle more than the cash - in the end I gave it up and we lost contact and I lost a 'mate'.....I thought

I just felt very sad to be honest...feel like killing him?? No...not one bit!!

Great advice. Can only be improved by:

3 - Go back to point 1

The thing that's getting me is the fact that he refuses to answer or respond. It's frustrating, to be honest i'd be more content if he actually picked the phone up and told me to sod off.

yeah, if he was a true friend he'd be falling over himself to either pay you back or let you know that he was struggling to come up with the cash; i'm not surprised you're angry and disappointed

Thats my stance and all of my mates know it. Im good with money and generally have always had a bit tucked away for a rainy day, my mates know i normally have spare cash to lend if they need it. They also know that if i dont get it back when we agreed on then at the very least the friendship is over.

I don't usually lend mates money but he's paid me back before with no problems. Lesson learned.

He lives with 2 other people i know, they're not exactly friends but i know them and have obtained their numbers - they're ignoring me aswell! SOMEONE PICK UP THE F*CKING PHONE!!

I know i shouldn't let it get to me but that ship has sailed.

Maybe i should sit back and be safe in the thought that what goes around comes around, and that revenge is a dish best served cold.

TBH... leave it. £80 isn't worth getting this worked up over or in trouble over. There MAY be a legit reason and he'll get back to you in a day or 2 but I would let it go. £80 will not ruin your life, but mates who take the piss will. If he gets in touch and has a legit excuse then that's your call.

I once lent a friend £200 because I had it in my wallet and he couldn't be bothered to go and find a cash point, on the understanding that I would get it back in the next day or two...

Eventually 3 weeks later he gave me £20 back, a couple of days after this I got another £10 out of him, a further few weeks down the line I got another £20.

I kept asking for the money and got excuse after excuse, needless to say I f*cked him off he is no longer a friend and I haven't spoken to him in around a year and a half.

£20 I'd let go, any more than that I'd have an issue with.

i always lend mates money and dreadful for getting it back... never been the one to hound people for cash even though it is mine.

my mate owes me £85 and has gone to dubai for 15months, says he will wire it across (yeahhh!!!)

and a good friend of mine has owed me £250 since jan but i know i will get that off him

Don’t worry too much, we all have issues mate, some worse than others. Personally I would leave it for at least a few days and next time I 'bumped' into him I would discuss it face to face. The money would not be much of an issue, however, him taking a liberty would. Don’t do anything stupid thought, and avoid lending cash to ‘friends’ in future. A lesson learned and all that. Good luck fella.

i hate to lend cash to mates, but as said above, if he dont pay you then he aint a mate, so seems as he is no mate treat him like a stranger who has just stole £80 out ur pocket and give him some ****, youve already lost him as a friend, just dont go over board and get yourself in trouble.

one of my mates still owes me £40, he was laughing with another lad a bit ago how i had forgotten, this lad tipped me off after i had mentioned he still owed me £40
(im a quantity surveyor so i remember when peopel owe me money)

i generally do not lend money to people, if i do it is very rare - infact in this case i had done him a favour and worked for him, but to avoid gettign moved to that venue i put it through the books in his name

i think i have however got at least half of the figure back in drinks though over various holidays, but i doubt it as i cant really rmember his wallet being opened
