VLCD - Very Low Calorie Diet - Lipotrim. I did it, and here's what I think. - 12 June 2008 21:45
Just wanted to start a discussion on these, and see if anyone had done one?

There are a few "programs" around, and I think James mentioned VLCDs briefly in a MuscleTalker 2 months or so ago.

Howard's Way program costs about 80 quid a month and is a ketosis inducing diet with packet food for 4 x meals a day.

I recently tried "Lipotrim", a ketogenic diet which drops you to somewhere under 600 calories a day, which is around 30-40 quid a week... less than most of us spend on food, especially if you eat out.

It used to be a prescription diet from Doctors for very overweight people, but is now available with pharmacist supervision.

Well.. with My array of Pharmacy contacts and the fact that I know more about diet and nutrition than most of them, I gave it a shot... and was very surprised.

Lipotrim is a food replacement diet. There are shakes and flapjacks, but I am told the latter are pretty rank... so I stuck with shakes. Chocolate, Strawberry and vanilla... and a chicken flavour soup mix. All are vegetarian but I wasn't too fond of the chicken soup, tbh.

For males it is 2 sachets a day made up with a pint of water, and around 2-3 litres of water a day on top.

Ladies get 3 sachets, equating to around 75% of the male food replacement.

The idea behind it is that your body goes into ketosis, and starts burning fat for fuel.

Your liver converts fat to ketones and you then start to lose around half a pound of fat per day.

It has a muscle sparing effect as your body will burn ketones before glucose, whereas on a reduced calorie diet with carbohydrates your body is more likely to covert muscle to glucose for fuel.

I have to say I was sceptical. So sceptical I called the manufacturers (A research institute) 3 times.

In the end I spoke to the American doctor who does the voice over on the Lipotrim video, and had a good long chat with him about it.

When I raised My fears about muscle loss, he laughed at Me (bastid lol) and told Me that your body isn't stupid and when in a state of ketosis (induced starvation) that it holds onto muscle and burns fat first, whilst also helping supress your hunger.

Well, long story short I did a month... with a couple of cheats *coughs* (I realised I could eat food with no carbs and not get kicked out of ketosis, so I cheated at weekends to stay sane)

How did I feel on the diet?

As My body changed over to burn the fat rather than carbs I have to admit I was a bit moody... felt tired and a bit ropey. I had a couple of early nights too. Actually a good thing :P

After 5 or so days though, it got easier, and after that it was actually great.

2 weeks in and I felt I had way more energy, and after 4 weeks I lost 14lbs with no real noticeable muscle loss.

Downside of the diet? Low protein... 60 grams per day! So I am debating that next time I will be taking in extra whey to up protein to around 2-240g, which may slow things a little, but keep the fat loss high.

I'm cutting this short here as My eyes are sore, been on the PC all day for work, and urgh.

I am going to do a test, a 6 week heavy training and eating plan to regain My lost muscle, and then try again.

With a lead in of a protein and fat diet to put Me into Ketosis before I start the lipotrim, I may find it easier.

I'll keep you posted anyway once I start, but until then if anyone wants to discuss, feel free.

Also if anyone has any first hand experience of a Cyclical Ketogenic Diet I'd be interested to chat (No carbs Mon-Fri midday, then carbs Fri - Sat midnight, train hard Sunday and back to no carbs again). Seems interesting and a number of articles state it works rather well.

Isn't the Cambridge diet and lighterlife similar to this? I did attempt the Cambridge diet once and had good results in the short time I did it but to be honest I like my food too much to stick to soups and shakes. I found, like you I would cheat on special occassions and eat meat so as to stay in ketosis. Short term is fine but couldn't do it for too long.
Only Irish coffee provides in a single glass all four essential food groups: alcohol, caffeine, sugar, and fat.

Good post mate thanks.

Am i right in saying it would be good to follow a diet like this immediately prior to starting an AAS cycle, in order to benefit from a rebound effect whilst your body readjusts to an increase in cals?

Hi guys :)

Right... glad to have helped, and I am actually going to write a journal on the next one after I've massed up again... with pictures >.<

Should be a few lines for each day so I can help a Pharmacist friend of Mine promote the service to men... apparently guys really do struggle to stick with this.

cleverclogs: Yup, I think they are.... Cambridge Diet and LighterLife seem very similar... soups, shakes and bars. Both also offer counselling.

According to My Pharmacist friend, the women are better on the diet and are fine with a once a week visit for urinalysis and such, but she feels that men need to be doing it every other day. 2 men tried and lasted under 2 weeks.

As regards cheating, I think it needs to be done only for special occasions like a cheat meal when strictly training or you will feel you can get away with it and end up breaking the diet.

As I'll be journal writing and having pictures I'll have to not cheat, lol.

qwilym: I wanted to do this before My imminent bulk, I actually have a few cycles of SD and have prepackaged them all in blister packs and was going to lean down then do the cycle (3 weeks on and then 3 weeks PCT as per the guidelines), but actually have decided to do the diet -after- the cycle with a few minor adjustments to it (extra protein for muscle retention?) and see how I fare.

Red_Devil and theiopener: I did minimal training on the diet... I only managed a few sessions of lighter than normal weights. If I'm honest I was a bit scared to be damaging muscle tissue and then only having 60gms of protein a day to repair with, and had no training partner to assist *coughs*

If anyone (James! ;)) has any ideas on how to work on this, I'd appreciate.

This is why I was considering the CKD because it allows for the carb up to train twice a week.

I felt no lethargy, just less energy to lift... Not sure how much was psychological and how much was down to lack of glycogen in the muscles, as I was also training on My own. I actually felt I had a lot of energy and felt very "fit" if that makes sense... I think the Dr suggested that once you were fully in ketosis you'd have a metabolism similar to an Olympic athlete (Just not the physique, haha)

Overall it was an interesting experience and I will definately repeat it and this time keep the journal as I said.

If anyone has any ideas of what to list... was thinking a months diet with weekly weigh ins and measurements at the same time on the same day. Better in the afternoon than the morning perhaps, as I won't be dehydrated from overnight.

Oh, here's My blister packs, lol. Who said it's just the old and senile that need them?

Talk about organised!! You might be able to get these packs from your local Pharmacist, I sell them for a living so I have samples at home.

I have the 4 sections per day, weekly packs, with perforations. This way I can tear off a day or more (or even one sessions worth) if I am going out, and don't have to sit and think "Hmmm... what's next on the list?"

James, is it feasible to put up a post to ask peoples opinions on whether selling these (as per the discussion we had) would be beneficial. Sales would be for a supplement pack filled with each persons requirements (Obviously not SD though!)

You would have gone catabolic for sure. You'd be ok on that protein if there was carb-sparing carbs, but there wasn't so goodbye muscle!

Obviously I'm aware of this project, so yes please make a post in General enquiring about these for opinions.
