underhand vs overhand pull ups - 12 June 2008 22:58
Hi All

A question regarding pullups/chins. What's the difference between a wide overhand grip and a narrower underhand grip. I'm assuming the underhand grip would work the biceps more so does that make it less effective for training the lats. I ask because my underhanded ( hand position not sneaky ) grip is a lot stronger.

Cheers

overhand works the lats more, underhand works the biceps more.

dont go real wide as it restricts the range of motion and can put stress on the shoulder.

HI Cliff

Thanks for quick response. So underhanded is still OK for the lats just not quite as good

both have their place. I often do sets of wide overhand pull ups, then finish off with a few sets of close grip underhand to punish the biceps

Thanks Cliff

Next back day I'll give underhanded a go and see how they feel

If you want to work your lats, stick to overhand grip mate, with your hand just over shoulder width apart.

Hi guys

Thanks for the advice, I'll stick with overhand and narrow my grip a bit I was doing them really wide. Probably why I'm struggling a bit. I'm just over 20 stone.

Cheers
