40kg above body weight? - 13 June 2008 11:15
hiya, i have just this month started doin deadlifts for my back, never wet near thm before but really starting t like them now. im 80kg and 6ft3" i manage to do 120kg for 4 reps. is this a reasonable weight to be starting out at or should i be lifting much heavier? but for example my benchpress i can only just do over my body weight..
Cheers Andy

If you are just starting to do them you should go light until you know you have nailed the form

120kg is a good weight considering you have just started, just ensure you are doing them correctly.

Form over weight everytime.

Your deadlift should be heavier than your bench, so in that respect the weight you're moving seems appropriate.

As for whether it is a reasonable weight for YOU to be lifting, if the reps are difficult towards the end of the set then it would seem like you're using an appropriate weight.
If you're struggling with every rep and you've not done this exercise before - too heavy.
If after the last rep you feel you've barely done anything - too light.

Being so tall the deadlift is one exercise that can be more difficult and can often lead to more back being used than is strictly necessary. Providing you're technique is good from first to last rep and you're increasing the weights sensibly, then progress should come nicely.
