Your opinion of fruit.... - 13 June 2008 12:59
Personally i enjoy fruit, but consider it one of "Natures treats" yet for many it seems to be considered some kind of "Free food" where they've convinced themselves due to the "5 a day" recommendation that they won't gain weight when consuming it.

I know a few people who will quite happily pick up a banana, apple and 2 plums for desert yet feel guilty when eating a yogurt which is perhaps 1/3rd of the calories, with far less fructose.

The whole "5 a day" seems to have back fired as there is no clear emphasis on veg as opposed to sugary fruits or smoothies.

I'd always prefered (and would recommend) a salad over a piece of fruit, far more filling and no doubt have a better range of vitamins than any fruit equal in calories.
Since the addition of just 200kcals to your daily intake can cause a weight gain of around 1.5lbs-2lbs a month it would not suprise me if previously those unaware of the "5 a day" recommendation were now seeing the weight slowly creep up with the addition of an apple or banana to their diet.

Anyhow, whats your view on fruit?
I think this "5 a day" needs to be promoted slightly differently.

I know, but many dont... which is what i was getting at(you didnt read it did you ).

If you had the choice, and thought both were equal (and most people who arn't interested in diet seem to think) sugary fruits would be the first choice right? Which is my 'problem' with the whole "5 a day" thing where fruit and veg seem to be grouped together with most people turning to tasty fruit...whilst ignoring plain old broccoli (and getting fat as a result of the calorie dense options).

Most fruit is hardly calorie dense mate

Instance

melon, Apple, Peaches, Nectarines, Oranges, Grapefruit, berries, exotic fruit like sharon fruit or physalis

are all very low calories mate, most people simply dont quite grasp the fact that 2 small plums are a portion.

I dont know anyone who have gotten fat out of eating 5 portions of fruit a day, i know plenty who have overindulging on crisps and drinking bottles of full sugar coke though with little to no exercise

I have to be honest, I am always more relaxed about having a piece of fruit than a ****ty snack like crisps for obvious reasons

Plus psychologically I still feel like I am 'clean'

I only tend to have about 2 portions of fruit a day as, as you correctly said, the rest needs to be veg.

Today I have got a banana, mmm.

Haha, well crisps and junk certainly are a factor for many.
However and apple and large banana over excess and your gaining 1.5-2lbs a month...a few months later and your out shopping for a bigger dress (not you specifically, of course )!

Lol stegsie!

Large banana*, 136g. 121 kcals http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts/fruits-and-fruit-juices/1846/2
Large apple*, 223g, 116kcal http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts/fruits-and-fruit-juices/1809/2

121 + 116 = 237 * 365days a year = 86, 505 kcals over maintenance(divided by 3500Kcals), 24.715714285714285714285714285714lbs heavier after 1 year.

Now wheter that means we need to buy bigger clothes or not? i guess it depends if they were elasticated

* Your apples and bananas may vary, highlights my point nicely though

I still say nonsense

Who the hell eats the same damn thing each and every say of the year, has the same output as well?

im sorry Rich but this is one time where i have to say that quoting figures and numbers and all this crap isnt even remotely realistic

good try though

RE: Your opinion of fruit.... - 13 June 2008 14:38
I wasnt proving it if was realistic, i was proving its not "non sense" by the use of math.
Adding 2 pieces of fruit to someones diet, will show significant weight gain(if not made up for elsewhere)...something very few seem to think about when it comes to getting their "5 a day".

Wheter output changes to a higher or lower value(lol, prob not since obesity wouldn't occur!), people eat the same fruit day after day(apples and bananas seem rather common in england!), or their pants are elasticated is another discussion

Veg kicks fruits ass, IMO

But mathematics of that nature have no bearing in real life situations though, its a pointless endeavour. Plus the fact that sites never really know what the true values of food are anyway, so again equally pointless

Ph and as for veg kicking fruits arse, parsnips, sweetcorn, carrots are all veg but contain more calories per weighed portion than their fruit counterparts

As said above I would rather see people eating 5 apples a day than 5 snickers. Snickers mmmmmmmmmm

I hardly ever eat sweet juicy fruit. Just as you find that fat doesn't satisfy you, I find that sweet juicy fruit doesn't satisfy me. I occasionally buy fruit that's been marked-down by 50-75% at my local Somerfield but when I get it home, I munch my way through the lot in no time at all and then still eat my normal food. I'd do the same with chocolate, though!

I do eat a little tomato (as the occasional blob of ketchup or the puree in a tin of sardines).

i eat loads of fruit

and to be honest i dont think anyone would get fat from eating extra fruit in their diet.

and they would certainly be healthier than someone who ate the same diet minus all the fruit.

i eat loads of pineapple, bananas, grapes, apples, oranges, plumbs, strawberrys raspberrys

i have never and will never count the cals from fruit and veg, they are a necessary and enjoyable part of anyones diet.

I love fruit and eat a portion or two every day. It's part of my diet, not gonna get fat on it, if i'm not losing weight then more cardio.

Certainly disagree with the above, as ive said above.

Do you calorie count as part of your overall approach?

I just ate a full stacked plate of bombay potato style wedges with melted cheddar on, washed down with 8 bottles of stella and 2 packs of salt and vinegar kettle chips

Am I over budget here ?
