20 June 2008 13:20
Hey guys, just bought some 'Mega Vita-Min' from holland and barrett. It says on the labe to take one a day but a friend suggested that i should take 2 because there isnt enough.. Vit A - 2,400 µg Vt D - 10 µg Vit E - 83.9mg Vit C - 250mg Vit B1 - 80mg Vit B2 - 80mg Vit B6 - 80mg Vit B12 - 80µg and loads of other vits and minerals... my question is, should i just take 1 a day or is there any harm in taking 2? i was told i would just urinate the extra out but wasnt to sure?

No definatly not IMO. Many of those vits are way over the RDA anyway so there is case that 1 a day might be to much. I used to take a standard 100% RDA vit and mineral for years and gave up about six weeks ago and swapped it for a large amount of friut and veg and I honestly have never felt better. I do have the occassional multi vit tablet but only after a night out maybe or days that for some reason I have not eat enough fruit and veg.

RDA is not really a good measurement. RDA is more to do with the amount needed to prevent deficiency as opposed to optimal health. Having said that why take any vit pills at all, get your diet nailed and then you'll get everything from that

Anti oxidants happily become 'pro oxidants' when over consumed. Massive doses alongside a high intake from food my not be ideal

i was under the impression that people who exercise regulary would need to consume more the the RDA. for example people who bodybuild consume more than 250g of protein a day compared to the RDA of protein which is about 50g a day. is this not true then with vitamins and minerals??

The RDA ios an outdated concept - the RNI covers everyone. For more info see my article: http://www.dietetics.co.uk/article-micronutrient-storage.asp

First off. Holland&Barret supplement are of the lower grade and not worth entertaining...The potency of the their supplements is also questionable as is the formulations and source. Second. RDA means squat. It was created and sealed in 1941. As previously stated, its there to avoid dire deficiency as witnessed in times of a world war! GM foods, Pesticides, Herbicides, additives, preservatives..etc all inhibit the absortion of nutrients....And Minerls that come from the earth have degraded over time due to soil Soil Erosion. Vits that are fat soluble, A-D-E-K are the ones that can over time be a cause for concern as the body doesnt flush these out via urine...so as long as you dont OD on those! In short without wanting to bore you to death...Ive found Animal Paks to be very good at providing everything required...This is the cheapest place I know of.http://www.sshealthfoods.com/pages.php?page=lt.formulas&details=0296 If you made a comparison to the H&B vits to the Animal ones, you would get a good wake up call. Also, Bio-care are excellent and are available from GNC, though arent directed towards athletes.
