Intercostal muscle. Extremely painful - 20 June 2008 17:30
Doing DB shoulder press today, upped the weight and consequently form was slightly worse. I try not to sacrafice form for weight but I've been using the same weight for so long I thought I'll try and push it. Anyway, came down quite low and pushed it up really fast pulling my intercostal muscles around the rib. Excrutiating pain around the left lat area and it hurts to breath. Needless to say training is off until I make a complete recovery but I wanted to ask those who have had a back injury as it seems quite common.
It's killing me the fact I can't train, and it plays on my mind that I'll be losing muscle and strength so I'm gonna want to go straight back into it. Is there anything I can do to aid recovery or pain. Using deep heat and taking hot baths at the moment, really frustrated.

^^ definatly... I popped one of mine when I got slammed during MMA, Keep the protein intake high.. REST (cant emphasize that enough).. take anti inflammatories if you need to, but I tended to stay off them cos I'm a believer that they retard the healing process and not really necessary. Only other thing that I believe helped was the hot/cold treatment.. for the first week or so keep icing it then after that I had sauna/ice cold shower(or ice pack) for a few mins then back in sauna and repeat til I got bored.

It does heal up 100% if you take care though, I'm fine now been back over a year and had the **** kicked out of me in training plenty of times ;)
