Navy Seal Screening Test
-
21 June 2008 08:18
A month - six weeks ago, I read about the Navy Seals screening test...and thought it was worth trying to replicate and give it a go. Tomorrow is the first time me and my training partner are going to give the whole lot a go and see what happens! The test: 450m Breastroke in 12.5 minutes 42 press-ups in 2 minutes 50 or more sit-ups in 2 minutes 6 or more pull-ups (no time limit) Run 1.5 miles in 11.5 minutes to finish We've been doing a bit of swimming for the last month and I'm doing the 450m in around 8 minutes. Will probably slow it down on the day to conserve a bit of energy. We've done the press-ups/sit-ups/pull-ups in the gym in relative comfort, so it should be ok, maybe just a bit harder on the press-ups with doing the swim. Then on to the run! We're hoping to eventually try the swim outdoors to make it a bit more realistic. Our local pool is next to a school, so we can do the swim then quickly get changed and go over to the schools all weather pitch to do the rest. We did enquire about doing the press-ups etc by the side of the pool but the Managers said it would be 'un-suitable' around children (????). I've bought some Powerade to take the odd drink off during after the swim etc. Would anyone recommend anything else? I'll post up some pictures and let you know how we both get on tomorrow :)

No replies, so not sure if anyones interested :( Got to the pool at 9am this morning. Bit of a nightmare getting a straight length out due to random kids etc, but managed to do the swim in 8mins 41 seconds (and 2 milliseconds?) So that's just under 3 minutes under the given time. Then had to drive down to the gym to do the rest as the weather was too bad to do it outside. Press-ups: Done 50 in just over one minute, all in one go. Could have maybe done a few more, but didn't see the need. Sit-ups: Done 60 in around 1min 20 seconds, again, could have maybe done more. Pull-ups: Knocked 12 out reasonably comfortably in one go. Could have possibly done a few more, but would have meant stopping and starting again. Run: Did a two minute warm-up on the treadmill, then re-set the machine and started again. Bit disappointed, but only managed a 13min 30sec mile and a half. Was running at 9mph towards the end, but couldn't sustain this for more than a few minutes. Not sure if it'd been easier to do the run outside as apposed to on the treadmill? Will do a few more weeks training, then give it another blast. Fairly happy with the performance, but gutted the run let me down at the end :(

Any american military fitness tests r not up to standards compared with other countries forces., 42 pushups, 1.5mile in 11.5mins. Thats like the british army, the royal marines is 3miles in under 22mins, minimum 60 push ups in 2mins, u should aim for that, not the navy whales!

bit wierd doing the run on a treadmill , but well done anyway mate , like wolv said, it seems a fairly easy test (for a fit person) do some hill sprints !! when you get back on the treadmill you'll walk 1.5 miles in 11 and a half !!
If you could see it , It wouldn't be subliminal. sex me up bigboy

British military test is 10.5 minutes for 1.5 miles with a 15 minute 1.5mile warm up. Best done outside. Sounds like you had a good go at it though mate well done.

Thanks guys! Didn't think it sounded overly hard, but still an achievement to say you've conquered. Going to do some running outdoors and see how I get on to get that time down. It really was too wet/windy to do the run outside on the day!

Reading that test makes me glad I was in the British Armed Forces and not the Yanks, as the Seals class themselves as Elite Personally though I have to admit I wouldnt pass it as cant swim to save myself, as its a sport/pastime whatever you wish to call it that I despise and cant remember the last time I was near a pool but I would be able to subsitute the swim for a 10mile run then complete the rest including the second run and pass with relative ease Navy Seals = Elite............. my arse!!!

Ironically, with only 42 push-ups, 50 sit-ups, and a 11.5 min 1.5 mile run you would barely pass out of NAVY basic training. Literally, you would pretty much have the absolute MINIMUM score needed to pass. I'm not sure where you got the "SEAL" thing from, but what you described isn't anything above what every soldier has to be able to do. Many police departments in the states use a similar test.

Might have a go sometime. I could do all the others but no chance with 6 pull-ups. Wouldn't have thought that a policeman needed to swim 450m. Swim yes but not that sort of distance

TBH the sit-ups, pull-ups and press-ups were no problem. The swim was fine for me, being an ex-swimmer. Its the run I'm finding difficult. The first mile is ok, its just the last 1/2 mile. I tried the run again this afternoon (after cycling to and from the swimming baths this morning and swimming for 30 mins) and got a mile out in just under 7 mins. So I was on track to complete the run in the time, but its hard work. Will have to try the run after a rest day and see if I can nail it.

It's a pretty poor standard to be honest, as said the Royal Marines is a lot harder as with the para's. If you want to try something hardcore take a look at what the SBS have to do!

From what I've read, the SAS one would be a killer. Running around on the fells for km after km until you break. Torture!

I hear the sas training is 7months! And none compare with the french foreign legion, which is supposedly the most difficult on the planet, which i could quite believe.

Think there have been the add programmes on TV over the years on the French Foreign Legion. Don't think you'd ever get to find out exactly what the SAS etc do, but can imagine it'd be un-real.

This is only the 'screening test' though training is much harder after that. Anyone watched BUDS class 234 ? The training looks really grueling there.

I can't believe the Americans recruit for the Navy Seals straight from the public??? Bizarre. Do yourself a favour Big Matt. Don't look past our own (UK) superb elite forces and look to another countries to get ideas. We are a tiny little island with a tiny little armed force (The US marine corps - you know that ones who sing and run at the same time, very loud (roll eyes) are bigger than our entire army. We still have the some of if not THE best trained troops in the world as we cant be complacent, we must have quality over quantity as we have no quantity. Sorry if this is a rant but as an ex Bosnia vet and UK serviceman I find looking past the far superior UK forces from your location stated as Cumbria to the US forces for an idea how to get fit quite insulting. I know you didnt intend this so no hard feelings. Just thought I should point out the Americans arent the best at everything even though Jack Bauer would have you think so
Mission Objectives 2008/9:- 1 - To eradicate excess body-fat and assist others in doing so. 2 - To drastically improve my strength to weight ratio.
