Heart Rate Monitors - Suunto VS Polar - UPDATE: Got a bargain!!! - 21 June 2008 17:30
Hello everyone!

I'm considering either a

Polar F55

or

Suunto T4

I'm looking for a heart rate monitor for cardio at the gym and running sessions out in the sticks. Which would you buy and why?

I've noticed they both have a "personal trainer" built in.

Well I bounced a few emails around and did some looking up. Apparently the coach feature in both the Polar F55 and the Suunto T4c aren't all that.

Infact the weights programme in the F55 is meant to be pants. There are long rants on various American forums about it. Not that I'm fussed about a weights programme by the way.

Seems the best and most efficient way to actually make use of the data is with the training programme that comes with each watch to install on the PC.

I was veering towards the Suunto T4c which sells in the UK for £130 to £140.

Now here is the best bit. I went on fleaBay and Lo and behold the top of the range Suunto T6c which has only just come out works out at £187 from US of A. This is a £300 watch in england.

So for a few bob more I have possibly the BEST HRM out there, I'm buzzing. I've bought it, sorted out the TAX hassle with the seller and she says I'll have it by Friday.

HAPPY DAYS!

Nice buy mate.
Have had an original Suunto T6 for ages now, downloading your workout HR etc. is a really useful training tool.
As is the ability to pre-programme your interval training etc.

Great, great training tool.

You won't regret it!

Hi fella thanks for replying. Yeah I was toying with a Suunto T4 and almost hit the buy button a few times. I'm usually someone who acts on impulse but this time I resisted. The Volcano dial put me off along with no back light and no crystal display.

Anyway I looked on youtube and some fella had reviewed the T6C and dissed the coach feature on the T4.

The T6C has only been out less than a month I think. People generally are hailing it as one hell of a HRM. Mine should be here by the weeks end, can't wait. I've been reading up on EPOC and TE...etc. Just getting my head around it.

What software are you using? The supplied or 3rd party?

Check out this:

Apparently the king of all HRM software. Check out the movie watching feature with vocal and flashing indications.

I'm just using the Suunto software TBH. It's fine for my needs, will look at those links though.
I'm not sure what they've added to the T6c but the predecessor that I have, the T6, is truly awesome. You have made a great purchase, I promise you that you won't be disappointed. The EPOC/TE readouts are great for knowing how to pitch your workouts to improve your fitness etc.

All the best, Jing
