Workout then to bed. What about food? - 22 June 2008 04:46
Hi guys, as part of my re-introduction of carbs into my diet I'm going to introduce them mainly after my workouts. (Been reading The Metabolism advantage). I still want to loose a bit more body fat so this seems like a good way to start to eat normally again.

My only problem is when I am working, I'll do a workout afterwards. But due to my hours of work I'll have to go straight to bed afterwards to get enough sleep to go back to work.

According to the book there is a 3 hour window after a workout in which your body will use that food for your muscles/recovery, and where it is less likely to store it as fat. However, If I've always been told not to eat too much before bed, becuase the metabolism slows down at this time. So that 3 hour window gets shut down pretty early right? Or wrong?

If I'm chowing down a sweet potato, veg and some protein (chicken most likely or quark for ease) with a whey shake and then going straight to bed, what does this mean? Body won't use it for recovery, thus storing it as fat? It will use it for recovery?

Anyone have any ideas?

Hope to hear,

RT

aslong as ur not like overloadin on sugar then i dont think much gets stored as fat. because the potato is low gi it isnt full of sugar. personly i would find it hard 2 sleep with a full stomach but see what every one else says. but i think it should be fine.

I have the book and while I don't follow it exactly I did take a lot from it. I workout 7-8 pm and I take in 1/4 of the day's carb intake around trainig which at the moment is 50gms so I split that into 2 servings and sip half a serving immediately before and during training and half afterwards (2*25) my protein is spread out evenly over 6 meals which is 34gms so I split that into 2 and have it with the during/pwo shake (fast carbs/whey isolate). I finish the workout about 8 ish so about an hour afterwards 9-9.15 pm I have another shake of fine oats and micellar casein in a 1:1 ratio so that's 34gms worth of protein and carbs, I also have mixed veg and salad 2 fish oil and off to bed about 10 ish and this has wroked for me and I'm leaning up nicely. Metabolism apparently slows down as the day progresses but if your working out late your stimulating your metabolsim and your muscles are more receptive to nutrient uptake so you can get away with eating at this time as a result. I never skimp on nutrition around this period. All you can do is give it a go, monitor and adjust if it's not working! You can't just follow any book/program blindly if it doesn't fit in with your lifestyle goals etc, in my view they just give you a template, you've goto adapt it to fit in with you which is what I've done. I've drawn from many sources that have helped me shape my own program that fits in with my goals and lifestyle/commitment etc which works very well for me.

Typical potatoe's are high gi, sweet potatoe/yams are lower on that scale but I wouldn't put too much stock in GI as this only looks at the source of carb eaten on it's own which we, as weight trainers never do (we also eat protein and veg etc with our carbs), other factors affect absorption rates of foods.

Cheers theiopener, thats what I wanted to hear lol.

Thanks to everyone else. Gothic, the book is a good read for sure, But I'm only using it for ideas. I'm not putting myself on that plan.

Frankenjim, interesting in hearing more about slowing absorbtion rate etc. Just for the info really.
