Possible Rotator cuff problem

Having recovered from a similar problem at Easter i'm a little worried that this is my second niggle in maybe 3-4 months. The first problem was due to behind the neck pressing, i was using a full ROM (lockout to traps or so) and this gave me pains when benching and other horizontal pushing movements. I rehabbed this injury no problems and have suffered no re-occurence having dropped BTN pressing. Last night another pain came on, in my left shoulder (the original problem was in my right). When moving my left arm from my side up to my head (as you would in a jumping jack/star jump) there is a very mild discomfort around what seems to be known as the painful arc; I can do this test no problems though, it's not 100% pain free but by no means excrutiating. However if i perform a lateral raise movement, i get some quite strong, deep pain in my shoulder. If i move my arm (still bent) so the underside of my arm is just above parallel to the floor, the same pain is evident. The only thing i don't understand with this problem compared to my first one is i can't identify any reason for it. It was fine one moment last night and now it's rather painful Any ideas?

I would hazard a guess from what you have said as the early stages of rotator cuff tendinitis. Likely to be caused by exisiting muscle imbalances, or possibly altered biomechanics caused by your previous injury to the other shoulder. What movements do you get pain on at present? You'll probably need to avoid them for a few weeks. If it is indeed tendinitis, then you'll probably need to address the muscle imbalances - without a full examination and assessment it would be difficult to suggest what these would be, but I would suggest there is a likeliness you don't do much, if any external rotation for the shoulder?

I've actually been doing some RC work at the end of each upper body session for a while now which is what makes it even more suprising! I couldn't say what weight-based movements cause it yet as it only came about last night and i'll be in the gym tommorow doing shoulders/tri's. It's definately different from the last problem i had so i may get problems from OHP instead or i may not this time. It could well be an imbalance though, i'm trying to address a posture issue currently where my shoulders are too far forward. Although stretching out more as aided this problem.

It could well be an imbalance though, i'm trying to address a posture issue currently where my shoulders are too far forward. Although stretching out more as aided this problem. There is a possible culprit then. I assume you know that the rolled forward shoulders decreases the space in the sub acromial space, which the rotator cuff tendons run through? That can cause a wringing effect on the tendons which causes the inflammation. Alternatively, it could be totally unrelated and could just be a minor strain. You can only keep an eye on things really. Just remember that pain is the limiting factor whatever exercise you're doing. No point aggravating things more than you need to.

Yeah, the only thing that i think will need knocking on the head for now is lateral raises - if i mimic the action (obviously without weights) i get the pain, so i'll be careful tommorow. I didn't know that rolled shoulders would have that affect, even more motivation to sort out these problems! Cheers mate, appreciated
