keep getting ill
-
23 June 2008 09:37
am a boxer and train hard about 5 times a week, it seems that I keep getting colds when a fight is approaching which really messes me up as training goes so well and im only about 60% when i get in the ring due to my illness. Obviosly all sports people are more acceptable to illnesses due to having a weaker emmune system compared to the average person. I was taking echinacea tablets during the winter months and I think it helped but you are not ment to take them during the summer months so I have stopped. for instamce amir khan obviously has the best advice etc and the other day he said he was down to 1.5% body fat, surely at this he should be getting ill but he dont seem too......... Can someone help me out please, thanks

I can relate to what your saying. I think the harder you train, the more you need to rest and the better nutrition you need to have. It may cost a few quid but it may be worth it. E.g. Before Training: An Endurance Gel During / Post: Pleanty of fluid mixed with EAS Glutamine MAtrix or something similar Post Training: Protein Supplement Plus i take fish oil through the day and a multi vit. I also add Goji Berries to my breakfast which are high in VIT C. You could go on forever i suppose but it's little additions here and there that will help.

Washing your hands regularly and being careful about the kind of people you come into contact with also helps.

1.5% my arse doubt very much thats true i dont think top bb pros are on stage stood still at that level. So to fight at it seems very unrealistic. Ramp up the vit c and just try and get as much rest as you can because you may be over doing it . Ras

Agree with the above, i train maybe 10-14 times a week, between cross fit, MMA and heavy weights and am never ill, i wash my hands regularly with anti bacterial handwash and it makes a hell of a difference. Im forever getting sore throats and colds without it. Also take 3g of vit c, 600mg of selenium and 50mg of zinc a day. I should add my diet is damn good with plenty of healthy fats, fruits and veggies.

Ya gotta get your sleep mate, if not your gonna burn out, eat well, cut down the lifting , you really shouldnt really be getting colds and stuff just cause your training hard, I mean you dont see the British Army running about with hankies and im pretty sure they train harder than most of us , you just have to train different.

^^ Agree 100%, rest is so important; especailly as a fighter. Most Pro fighters I know have a sleep in the afternoon (after their morning session and before the evening session) You need quality rest or all the training in the world won't matter.
