Push Press or Bench first?
-
23 June 2008 11:56
I've read in the past Push Press before Bench is better cause it has less of an impact on the other. However my bench is weaker and my chest is what I need to develop the most so should I still do push press first or start with bench press when I'm fresh?

I've always worked on the theory of work what needs the most improvement first to be honest. I've also developed the habit of switching the order around every 12 weeks or so.

I would do them both on PUSH day, so I could put squats between them as well as to give the delts a bit of a rest

start off with bench first, nothing worse than the shoulders or triceps failing before the chest during benching personally i do not rate the flat bench and prefer to use an incline

What does the rest of the day look like. It may be the case, like danchubbz says, you can fit another exercise between them to allow the delts and triceps time to recover. Either way I'd go Bench before Push Press. Do PP first and your delts and tris will already be fatigued so these will fail before the chest has had a decent workout on the BP. Do BP first and although the delts and tris will be fatigued from this exercise, they'll still get a decent workout in the PP. Saying all that, I wouldn't do a standard BP anyway but would prefer to do Guillotine Press thereby maximising chest over delts/tris.

If having a better bench is more important to you then bench first. If you want to improve your overhead then push press first.

With the Guillotine Press, you lower the bar much higher up the chest (depending on ROM of shoulders), either to the neck or clavicle. More emphasis is placed directly on the chest but you'll find less weight can be used. I've never used these as a main chest exercise but rather further down the running order on Chest/Push day. I will be on my next routine though.

Push press first, if you're tired on that then you leave yourself more susceptible to injury than if you reverse the case and are tired on bench press.
