good to take a break? - 23 June 2008 22:33
Im contemplating taking a week off from the gym, mentally i feel i could continue working out, i think i just want alittle break to evaluate routine and maybe relax for the week and get back hard next week.

Ive been working out 4 days a week for last 8 weeks, intensity and load have been high. Have seen good progress in lifts and thinking a week off will allow body to stop adapting to my current schedule.

Does it feel a chore to continue training then? Especially if your feeling this way after 8 weeks?
Feel the fear, and do it anyway!

Breaks are terrible things. Lazy people have breaks, Cycle your training, light builds up to heavy over a period of time, then when the time is right back to light again. No need for breaks unless severly injured. There will be plenty of time for breaks when you're dead.

I understand FatPetes reply. But I have made some of my best strength gains after a weeks break.

i could do with a break, feel completely spaced out after last weekend + holding afew injurys. Still going to the gym as i just couldnt sit on my arse all day. Just be doing light weights and high reps all week for a change.

is that week or week(s)?

though as pete says build up and down. you may be trianing harder for longer peroids than pete is, thus need total rest.

I don't think so pal.

Have you ever seen what Pete does? Go take a look in his journal.

M8 if you feel you need a break then take one ... It's a good idea to listen to what your body's telling you...If not maybe you could still go to the gym but do something different. Do exercise's you've never done before.. Jump on a differnet machine . Do some extra CV. Or go light..

Sometimes i feel a bit stale so i'll do something like this and feel sooo much better for it..
Never forget that you are unique, just like everyone else

There's plenty of reasons to take breaks there's plenty of reasons not to.

You should never rule something out - everyone is different. Volume, intensity, health, goals, lifestyle, they all count here.

However knowing for sure when to take a break is hit and miss unless you keep an eye on things like waking body temperature etc.

My advice: take a break for a week, if you come back stronger and keener and more focused then you've taken a break at the right time. If there's no difference then you wait longer next time.

i take a week out every 8 weeks, it gives the body some RnR to recover from any niggles and you'll come back with renewed energy and passion to train...

i'm usually climibing the walls by day 3
