Squats & deads on the same day??
-
24 June 2008 14:33
Alright guys, My routine is now twice a week and was wondering is doing squats & deads ok to do on the same day?? My routine looks like this- Monday: Squats Deadlift Calfraise Wide grip pull ups Bicep Curls Tues: REST/sometimes football after work Wednesday: Bench Shoulder Press Dips Chins Thurs: Football/Cardio Friday: Rest/drink Saturday: Rest at the moment but Football when season starts (match days) Sunday: Rest Also wondering, not been gym for 2weeks coz I'm in the middle of moving home and decorating new gaff after work etc, etc.....Will there be a significant loss of strength when I hit the gym by next week?? Please all comments and suggestions welcome with helping me with a good twice a week routine but I suffer with bad DOMS after squats & deads thats why I tend to do them both at least a couple of days before a football day.. Thanks!!

Squat dead same day? Been alot of debating on thÃs recently. I personally say no. They are both two compound moves where you lift heavier weights than any other exercise. Doing them both on the same day just means youll not be able to give 110% on one of them. Also seeing as both are mass building moves, does it not make sense doing one say on Monday, and the other on Wed or Thursday, having a few days rest inbetween so your body can recover totally before you assault it again with mega weights?

Yea, I've seen there has been some debate on the question I ask but no real answers jus personal opinions I guess. I can only do a twice a week routine because of playing football & so I thought it would be best to split the routine on a MONDAY & WEDNESDAY to fit around doing the football twice a week aswell. Bearing in mind I DO NOT wanna be doing squats 1-2days before Football training or match because of DOMS thats why they have to be done say Monday so by Thurs legs are free of pain. All I want is peoples comments on if my Routine above is Satisfactory for still making gains or should I swtch it up & what should I do to switch it up??

i have done it in the past, it is not easy though if you are pushing as far as you can on the first of the two if you do do them on the same day dont forget that you may then have 6 days to rest your legs whereas on seperate days you may have 3 or 4

it was used in the 60's by dave draper, deads on leg day. deads work the lower back and hamstrings and ties in well with squats that work the thighs/hams/glutes. in essence, a training routine with squats first and deads afterwards ties in well, if you can stomach it! the weights you lift however will be reduced for deads as the hams will be weakened and a fair amount of energy is spent on squats so there's a kicker

I've done front squats and deads on the same day. It's hard work but easily doable.

Thanks for the replies from every1. I guess I'll just carry on with my routine as there has been no comment on changing it up. Must admit that doing the squats before deads does effect the amount on deads I lift compared to when I was doing deads on a seperate day.

Cant say Im a fan of the routine (weird split), but I'd add in some sort of rowing movement (Bent over BB Rows as an example). If your Deadlifiting after Squats, doesnt mean you have to go full whack, you can still progress at lower intensity and work on aspects like speed of the lift.

If anything I prefer them on the same day as it takes me 5+ days to recover from either deads or squats, so doing them with 3days between would be harder I think

I train my lower body twice a week and on one of the session I do deadlifts then front squats. Energy wise it is fine aslong as diet is good. I found things like this hard while cutting but on a clean bulk it feels ok. The only thing that may or may not be a problem for you is, I've found that my hips/core fail me on front squats more than my quads which are pretty fresh after deadlifting. I make up for this by doing a few heavy sets on leg press. Lower1: Squats Leg Press/Bulgarian squats Hams Calfs Lower2: Deads Front squat Leg press Calfs
Age - 18 Bench - 95kg (at 62kg) Deadlift - 120kg (at 62kg) Squat - 100kgx5 (at 62kg) Front Squat - 92.5kg (at 62kg)

I've supersetted squats with deadlifts and front squats with romanian deads too. It's tough. The problem is with this thread is that there is no definitive answer. I think you will get gains either way. You just have to try it.

99% of the time I would advise you to split them up for the best gains in performance and mass. Still waiting to meet that other 1%......

Squats and deads on same day is fine if you can handle it.

The point is not handling it, the point is both of them are heavy compound exercises. If you do one there is no way on God's green earth that you can give 100% for the other. Which I see as a waste. Point.
