Yeah mate, my bird and I go their often. Its awesome. We are going this weekend again.

Depends what your into. There are some super clubs, but we dont go clubbing all that much. Then you have all the romantic stuff, boat rides etc. During the day its sooo busy and alive. Just an awesome atmosphere. And of course the redlight district. Crazy place. Youd be amazed how many tourist couples there are, specially in the live s e x shows! Its not seedy like you would think. Just a weird experience.

And ofcourse the weed shops. My bird smokes, I dont.
Cant really recommend a hotel, we usually rock up and book one at the tourist office. And the cheap ones are a bit dodgy from my experience!

I've been a couple of times and not for the whole drugs/red light district thing. Obviously you can walk by and see it but we did that during the day just out of nosey-ness.

There are some beautiful hotels, restaurants etc, scenery is amazing. loads and loads to visit, see and do. well worth a visit mate

Thanks for all the reponses. Seems like a good place for me then. Will definitely make more enquiries. Is the city centre quite small? For some reason I imagine it as being a small town with small people walking around in wooden shoes!

It is a wonderful place, but a friend of mine who goes about once a year just got back and reported that prices have shot up, this is further exacerbated by the pound / euro exchange rate

How expensive are we talking for the essentials such as a pint and a pie?

I wonder if Amsterdam will ever go smoke free? Surely that would have a massive effect on their 'cafe' culture!

I'll ask him to pop in and provide details, but I have some memory of steak and chips for two with a couple of drinks each being sixty quid. Don't quote me on that though.

3 nights hotel - 450 eu (although I'm guessing we could of got cheaper)
2 steak, chips, salad, couple of drinks - 70 eu
big breakfast and pint of Guinness - 16 eu
2 pints Heineken - 10 eu
2 kebabs - 14 eu
Joint - 3.5 eu

As Pete said along with the exchange rate being naff the cost of living is crippling for tourists. I've been at least once a year for the last 8-9 years, but sadly I wont be rushing back anytime soon.

They seem to be going that way in several places although the coffee shops still seem unaffected.

ps As long as you're both fairly broad minded it's a great place for couples. If you havent been then go

Cheers for that. Bit pricier than I though but having lived in Melbourne for 7 months it seems about normal!

its obviously not the same as if u were going to south-america or to africa for holidays, where goods and services will always be cheaper and u can live like a king paying stuff in pounds. but in my case (16yrs old) i dont mind going to the supermarket and making my own food (mostly bread and ham really), so i didnt really spend much money on that. I did however spend all my savings in the coffee shops. Oh were they good

lol

if you want a drinking holiday then amsterdam wouldnt be the best choice.

if however you want to smoke cannabis, eat some mushrooms and sleep with a pro then its a good choice
