What is best for building muscle, Slow heavy reps to failure or not so heavy highreps to a pump, give reasons why, Your reasons that is.
Had a discussion in my local council gym about it. Just wanted your opinions. No arguing please.

No higher than 10 reps id say. But other than that each individuals growth will be triggered by different types of training. I improve with heavy weight with reps going no over 5.
Bench - 140kg
Squat - 180kg
Deadlift - 190kg

I'd say slow heavy reps to failure and not so heavy high reps to a pump.
Ten thousand glorious years.

varies from person to person though generally though to be 8-12 reps for all muscle groups except for legs which are 12-20

do a search in the training/beginners forum on rep ranges or hypertrophy

I pump is just that, where as if I get a pump in the muscle im working to early, I feel it can hinder my session and cant lift as heavy for my usual rep range which is about 6-8 reps mostly.

A pump wont break down the mucle as much as going heavy....at least thats how I feel.

Intensity, intensity, intensity - within your muscles' rep range barrier - usually 8-15 for upper body and often up to 20 reps on legs.

Either method you mention will produce results as long as there's no swinging, cheating, hip-swinging, quarter-depth reps and all the other comical stuff that comes with trying to look "'ench" in a gym.

I tend to pyramid my reps with a higher increasing weight.

For example - squats yesterday.

120K x 10
140 x 8
160 x 6
180 x 4
190 x 2
