to bulk or not to bulk - 27 June 2008 11:10
Hello everyone, I've been reading this forum for around a year and though id take the plunge and sort posting.
About 18 month ago i was a big fat 17.5 stone who ate rubbish and drank like a fish.

I became tried of being the fat lad and joined the gym. I now weigh 13.2 and its all mainly down to the people on this forum and I would like to say thank you. Alot of you have helped me without even knowing it.

At one stage I was done to 12stone but I look too skinny.the only part of me that bothers me is my lower stomach and love handles. (even when I was 12stone I still had these) I want to get to about 14stone but Im scared to death of being becoming fat.

you sound the same as how i started. i dropped to 12.5 st and i had bones popping out everywhere but the belly sag and the side bits were still there, i started at about 18+ stone though.

i was also scared of getting fat bulking up, and i did get fat. but thats because i didnt plan it well and i just had it in mind "eat as much as you can" because people say that. but you shouldnt. you can only grow muscle so quick and eating 5000 calories a day when your body only needs 3000 is not going to help. i repeat DO NOT go with this route, eating as much as you can WILL make you fat again, unless youre taking steroids etc.

eat clean foods, in sensible amounts. are you currently losing weight? if so, my advice is add 500 calories a day from clean foods and check whats happening again in 2 weeks time. didnt gain? add another 250 calories and see whats happening again. go for about 1lb weight gain every 2 weeks to keep the fat gain minimum.

are you currently gaining weight at the above rate? keep doing what youre doing.

there is no magic numbers etc. get a base line 220g protein or so, about 70g fat is the standard and make the rest in clean carbs (oats etc).

i think the only way to get that saggy soft bit out the middle is add some muscle first, then strip down. with no muscle and stripping down you just look skinny with a fat belly.
