How much Salad and Veg - 27 June 2008 14:00
Hi Lads quick one im in the middle of doing a proper diet my 1st one that ive done properly, but im getting stuck on certain parts

I want to cut 12Ibs of fat in record time not to fussed about loosing muscle at this stage as im yet to start any weight training,

Ok all i need to know is how to decide how many grams of veg or salad to to serve with your main part eg, salmon / chicken? does that makes sence

for example

12.30pm 150g Tuna
? Salad or Veg
? Rice or pasta ect

really struggling on portion sizes i suppose you could say,

cheers guys

As far as salad and most veggies are concerned, cutting down on them isn't important. A "serving" of iceberg, romaine, or spinach is relatively big... a full dinner plate sized salad is only like 30 calories. What you want to skip are the fatty dressings, butter, etc... that you might put on veggies or salad (those are what will get you in trouble). Some veggies are higher in calories that others, you can use http://www.nutritiondata.com/ to look up pretty much anything and see what's in it.

As far as carbs go, the "serving size" of rice or pasta is smaller than many people think. They always seem to be something that people overeat. Obviously, how many carbs you need depends on your goals, your current size and energy needs, etc... I would suggest looking at the servings on the side of the box and measuring out whatever they give for a serving size so you can judge calories vs volume of food. After you do this a few times, you'll know about how many calories you are eating without having to bring out the measuring cup all the time. Pretty much every package is going to have nutrition information on the side.

I wouldn't be bothered about weighing out salad and vegetables, don't fuss about portion size with these things - just eat plenty, all good stuff to fill you up. I eat a massive salad nearly every day. As mentioned above, watch out for dressings, oils and butter though as these bump up the cals.

No reason to measure vegetables out really. If your cutting perhaps limit things like sweetcorn or peas (lots of natural sugars) bang up fibrous veg like broccolli, asparagus, cabbage etc
