-
27 June 2008 14:45
Just got this article through today - thought it might be of interest to some, and it backs up my continual harping that fish oil alone is not enough Will have to try to get a full copy of the article.

What are the dietary recommendations for ALA, never knew they exsisted? Always assumed ALA was only 'good' because it was converted to EPA/DHA which we're the good guys we wanted. However admitedly, havent put much time into looking into it. This seems to say ALA has benifits, so its not just a case of "its good because it becomes EPA/DHA" then? Have they backed this up with research or not?
My posts are all my opinion and based on current knowledge/understanding.

Yes, there's research out there - have a look on pubmed for ALA and heart health, should find a lot. The simple reason why there is a donkey load of research about EPA/DHA is because the fish oil companies are huge, and have paid for lots of it. Researchers don't work for free, and if the fish oil companies can afford to pay the bills, that's where the research is going to go. I was down at Loughborough university the other day trying to get some research started, and was chatting to 5 professors about Udos and we also talked some about fish oils. Some of the research they are doing is using 20g fish oil ED, so I asked if they were concerned about pushing short term benefits of lcpufas vs the long term oxidative damage from refined, damaged fish oils, their simple answer was yes. There is a great willingness to work more with ALA/LA, just needs funding, which we are hoping to help towards Here's the industry reaction

Of course fish oil alone isn't enough Diet is not about supplements, supplements, supplements. It's about variety ensureing you're getting the fully array of nutrients from a range of different foods Simple as that

ORIGINAL: James Of course fish oil alone isn't enough Over the years on this and other boards the exact opposite has been argued heavily, most likely due to the huge coverage fish oils have received, and the questionable recommendations floating about
