any suggestions for cheap insurance companies for a young driver?

any quote i get online seems to be ridiculously expensive even for a 1ltr banger

Direct Line always used to be very expensive, but I think they're feeling the pain from the comparison sites now (hence the million ads haha) so might be worth a try as I'd bet they've cut rates.

Also, the normal comparison engines are worth a look.

What insurance companies do is group people into risk catagories, so whilst Norwhich Union may have been cheap for you 6 months ago, they might be expensive now. They lower prices for specific risk catagories when they're low on them (in terms of their portfolio strategy), and raise them on other when they're full up. You're probably best for that reason, doing the gocompare/confused/etc route.

i have used a few of these sites but it seems because im 19 and a lad they think ure a s*** driver and charge a fortune. Quotes seem to be way higher than friends of mine, think your better of phoneing up for quotes and doing a bit of haggling to get price down

Personally I think this testicle tenderness is due to my recent return to AM cardio. I do it naked on a recumbent bike and my gonads tend to flop about.
