Becoming a driving instructor? - 04 July 2008 11:09
Hi guys and girls, i have just come back from an interview with a driving school as im thinking of taking this up as a career.
I am wondering if anybody is currently doing this job with success? It seem like a huge outlay and uncertain on the return. Granted there is a need for the job and you can guarantee work but are you having to work long hours? and with the current fuel prices etc is it really worth it?

Im trying to find a new career, something that will go alongside my training etc. Driving instructor seems to be flexible etc so would be ideal but i just feel that the initial investment is rather alot and then they just dump you with a load of books to learn or your own...

I am also wanting to to do my reps pt course but doubt there is much money to be made although i will be working on the door 3-5 nights a week as well..

Thoughts and opinions please???

Have 2 mates who tried driving instucting, both gave it up inside a year, in order to make any form of decent income you will need to work all the hours in the day, not worth it IMO, plenty of other careers in which you can make a decent living working less hours.

I did the PT thing but in the end gone back to my previous career due to similar reasons.

A mate of mine tried it a couple of years ago. The companies offereing you "agency" setups are trying to avoid paying for the car costs. Seriously. Why go to all those lengths if they could simply employ people and hand them a pool car to go training in???

My instructor was a part time driving instructor and part time class 1 driver. He had a couple of nice cars and seemed to make ends meet well enough.

Hi

If you want to become a driving instructor first thing you need to do is apply for a starter pack from the dsa and have a criminal records check done. Once you've done this then you are ready to start the exams (3 altogether)

part 1 - theory test with hazard perception
part 2 - driving test - 1 hour long and a very high standard of driving is needed. Maximum 3 attempts.
part 3 - test of your instructional ability - you have to teach an examiner who is role playing a learner pupil. Maximum 3 attempts.

There are good and bad sides to the job. Don't think that its a piece of piss just telling people to turn left and right. You must be a patient and have very good communication skills.

Don't be sucked in to all this crap of earning £30k a year. It will take you a while before you see that kind of money depending how good you are, although it is possible.

Any questions ask.
