How do people react to your training? - 04 July 2008 11:22

...When I say people, I mean non-training people. I know quite a few of the female members are preparing for competitions, or dieting so I wandered what the general consensus was on how people viewed your lifestyle?

For example, if I say i have been to the gym twice, they say I must be totally mad (am only slightly )

I find most people are intrigued by it all. I was asked just this morning how I stick to the diet and have the willpower.....I'm just honest and tell them it's as hard as it is for anyone else whether they're looking to lose weight to compete or for the beach, just my end goals have to be more precise, being an extra couple of pounds over weight on stage looks worse than it would on a beach where you're not being compared to others

Quite a lot of folk have commented on how fit I am, and when I lost some weight a couple of years ago - what a lovely slim figure I had. As soon as I tell them about the weights they immediately say "ooh, be careful you don't want to get muscles/big etc". Errmmm, too late that's exactly how I got my best results.

Afraid it tend to go right though their ears at that point. To many myths around. A few people closer to me are just impressed with my dedication through thick and thin, recognising it's part of my life and often I get asked to help move things!

a couple of people have said 'you're wifes in very good shape' to my o/h but no-one says anything to my face, I dont mention training to non exercising people as they either just dont 'get' the idea of regular exercise or they seem to feel I am critical of them for not exercising.

I do get a lot of comments from male and females. Many of the comments are on how fit they think I am, hence I dont need to do all the work out/dieting that I do....!?! When I am honest with them and say I still have (very) far to go as Im aiming for competition most of them are surprised as they rarley come across women who do bodybuilding.

I agree with you Gingernut; Some are positive and say go for it, others are disgusted as they think its all fake tan and oils.
I have found that Diet is a very misunderstood word, same as weight lifting and effects of it. When someone comes with a myth I have to address it in hopes of enlighten them a bit more... Not everybody likes to hear the facts though

I do have some non-trainers that dont support me as I'd hoped but instead seems happier if I sometimes give into something thats off my regime. Peer pressure can be difficult to handle. I havent really understood what thats all about yet. Dont they want me to succeed or is it that they simply dont agree with my lifestyle being different from theirs?

People i know have very differing views on it all, when i was getting ready for my comp some just thought i was trying to loose weight and they said i was thin enough, but now they realise what i was aiming for ie when they've seen the photos on stage etc they are cant belive i actually looked like that under my baggy ill fitting clothes.

People do ask me for tips on getting in shape but once you actually tell them you train with wieghts then they dont really want to know, as they think you will become a muscled monster within a couple of weeks.

You actually get a lot of that when people talk about men and steroids. They go on about how they'd be huge in a matter of weeks. I wish LOL

Too true!

I find people aren't too shocked at the concept of going to the gym as a lot of girls go to aerobics or whatever a few times a week nowadays. It's deffo the weights people have an issue with.

Some people are intrigued and ask me all about my diet and what I have to do, and about the whole competing side of things, and others tell me I'm getting too big (!!) and I look disgusting. You get a right mix of reactions!

I think this is very true, one hand they are saying you must be mad to train as much as you do, then straight after they are complaining about their weight/figure!
