Squat/Deadlift question.. - 04 July 2008 20:24
Ok,this may seem a strange question but is it better to deadlift with sore legs(DOMS) or squat with a sore back??

The reason i ask is because i'm trying to squat and deadlift at opposite ends of the week(mon/fri) and i generally recover slowly so i wanna know which way round to have the squat and deadlift..if i squat fridays then my legs may still be sore on monday and if i deadlift fridays then my back may still be recovering by monday..i know i should be recovered but it just doesnt seem to happen

I've seen guys at my gym squat and deadlift on consecutive days which i find impossible....anyone got any thoughts?

Why not squat and deadlift for your main session on the Monday day, then do light squats and pulls just to get some work in on the Friday? I find this works pretty well for me (since I had trouble doing both heavy on different days for more than a few weeks at a time), and with time my work capacity should improve to the point where I can spread them out.

Same here mate lol..the thought of it alone scares me..i'm not as tough as these Adlington boys..I will try it tho one day but normally after squats or deads i'm so knackered i just want a protein shake and then go home!!

I've had a peak in your journal and i see how u do it...very impressive stuff!!

Only trouble with me doing that is squatting any more than once a week, even if one session is light, canes my knees totally..i have tried it i the past and it wasn't successful!

if your knees are that bad, id deadlift and squat seperate weeks. why are your knees bad?

Thanks for the compliment :).

Knees: there are two factors here. One is that my Friday squat session is very light compared to my Mondays, so the load is relatively low. The other is that, except in the last stages of prep for a raw competition, my knees are never ever uncovered. My heavy sets are wrapped, and my light work and all warmups are done with neoprene sleeves. The difference having properly warm knees makes is unbelievable.

I just found that, squatting and pulling in separate sessions, after about a month my lower back was so fried that I couldn't do the washing up without resting half-way through and on a bad day my back would pump just walking across a room. I could probably manage fine now, but tbh I quite like my current system. My deadlift's not really moving as much as I'd like though :(.

If I had to choose, it would without a doubt be deadlifting with sore legs; much bigger chance of injury if your back is extra weak during squats (plus form would be more likely to go to hell)

Saying that, I'm sure there's a better way around it; either what Rick said, or active recovery work, etc.

I squat and deadlift heavy on same day once a week every week, have on problems, try that, it takes time say 1 month to get use to it, start light and build up over time, and you'lll love it

They just ache constantly if i overtrain the squat..i don't use wraps which is something i will have to start doing!

I personally would squat first. A fresh back is much more important (read: MUCH more) for keeping proper form. Deadlifting with tired legs your form might slack a bit, but squatting with a tired back....
