barbell/dumb bell press - 04 July 2008 20:54
why do i find the dumbell press a lot harder than barbell bench press? with barbell i can manage 115kg comfortably but with dumbells 40s are a struggle,i find getting the dumb bells up hard too

get someone to lift them for you, tar strain off rotator cuff and avoid injury. dumbells are harder because its ure shoulder and no chest

More stabiliser muscles recruited for dumbell press, as each hand is free to move in any direction, unlike when both hands are grasping the same bar. Also, you may actually be inadvertently using a greater range of movement with the DBs; BB press you pretty much can't go below your chest height, but DBs can, depending on how wide you're holding them.

Stick with it, you should find that you improve your DB press pretty quickly, although you may find that you never enitrely catch up with your BB press, IMO this is normal.

Don't quote me on this, but I believe it has a lot to do with not being able to use your triceps as much.

I start my chest/tri/shoulder routine with a flat barbel press because all of these get a good workout with my hands outside my shoulders on the bar. When I use dumbells, I can't use the extension of the tricep to push DBs up since the hands aren't fixed in one place. This combined with having to use more stabilizers makes it harder to lift heavy.

Totally agree. I believe Stuart Mc Robert wrote that you should be able to lift 80% of your barbell bench press on a dumbell bench press.
