who's tried??? - 05 July 2008 11:44
Negative reps for benching??? was speaking to a guy in the gym yesterday and he was a strong mofo!! especially benching!! he was big but not excessively (just over 16 stone) but he just looked solid!! and we got chatting and he said that negative reps for benching boosted his bench up more than anything else he's ever tried, say my max is 135kg i would use 140kg and do three negative reps fighting it as much as i could on the way down, then when it gets to my chest the spotter helps lift it back to the top then repeat. has anyone tried these as im intrigued now??

ive done them, they do work a little. but i train alone and i wouldnt ask a random erson to lift the weight for me for negatives. your bench isnt too bad at all, your squat is lagging!

Im not happy with my bench, but my squat is around 150k now and rising fast!! because im kinda new to them (done them a few years ago but knees played up, but there fine now) Squatting is having a MASSIVE crossover onto deadlifting as this is now higher also, although my bodyweight is higher now by a few kg's.

Muscles what sort of gains from doing this did you experience??? i.e X more reps with X weight or Lifted X amount more?????

Didnt do anything for me, except feel an uncomfortable level of strain on my shoulders.

There are quite a few studies looking into this. Some people it works for, some it doesnt. Not something Im going to do anytime in the near future.

i usually use them at the end of my heavy set. but you really need to trust your spotter.

if you are doing them early in your workout you can use a medium weight, and as you try to resist the bar on the way down the spotter can apply a little pressure to keep the bar moving down, again, your spotter really needs to be on the ball or your in trouble.

Negatives are awesome, they can take you to levels of DOMS that you can't get to otherwise!
I would recommend two spotters tho for negative benching, as you will be out of the equation by the time you wanna rack the bar!
If you can heap your winnings, and risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss, and lose, and start again at your beginnings, and never breathe a word of your loss; Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it, And, which is more, you'll be a Man, my son
