An apprenticeship question - 07 July 2008 22:35
I just rang my local college today to enquire about a plumbing apprenticeship. Apparently i have to secure a job with a company and THEN ring the college back to tell them i have the apprenticeship.

Why would any company employ someone who has no experience in the relevant field what would u be doing for the first few weeks when u have little to no knowledge on the subject?

They would give yuo a start date which usually is when college starts, you have to prove to the company you have the brainpower, reliability etc. to be a suitable employee then you get your papers via the college and your actual hands on experience with the company. I just got an apprenticeship and had to go and sign the papers at 8 in the morning as it was a few days before my 20th bday, wait till after I'm 20 and it would have cost the firm another several thousand to train me...

Hi mate local companies hire you as an apprentice to basically be a labourer yet learn as you go. They get grants off the goverment to help pay your wages (still low). I did an apprenticeship with a gas company & as long as you get your head down & work hard theres plenty of money & skills to be picked up. Good luck with that

yeah i dont really mind about the pay..i heard its at least minimum wage if you are over 18 so it will do for now.

So i should just ring round local companys? Most of the plumbers round here are self employed, or own a very small company. Would these still employ me

Yeah just ring them or if they have local offices pop in & speak to them. Have you tried the bigger companies for apprenticeships like B.Gas or E.on & so on?

There's loads of plumbers out of work at the moment buddy, 4 years ago they had a major push recruiting plumbers this has lead to a over supply of plumbers plus it doesn't help with all the Polish guys who came over with plumbing qualifications.

i'm an ex apprentice and i joined an apprentiship company that finds companies for the trainees.
Once a company has been found, training starts and so does the college course

its all costs money and you have to be sponsered
