Are cyclists the ultimate road menace? - 08 July 2008 11:27
This morning on my way to work I was going around the round-about and taking the last exit when some idiot on a push bike came flying out in front of me. I actually saw him coming and thought “This moron thinks the rules don’t apply to him and he’s going to keep going”. Otherwise I would have wiped him off the face of the earth. Anyhow, after braking in front of him he gave me the middle finger salute for a spilt second until he saw the “I’m going to get out of my car and punch your lights out for doing that” look and he quickly peddled off. It was actually kind of funny seeing his jaw drop as he realised he shouldn’t have done that!

That’s not the first time I’ve had problems with cyclists. One idiot down in London went flying through a pedestrian crossing light and missed me by inches. Unfortunately, an elderly lady in town recently had her leg broken when some nutter cycling on a foot-path knocked her as she walked out of her house.

Anyone else think cyclists are a major danger to road users and pedestrians?

Yes...and horse riders.

Where is their insurance I ask you?? A cyclist can scrape down the side of my vehicle, and yet have no license plate to identify him/her and no insurance to cover the damage.

Funny i had one this morning, was at a junction turning left and a cyclist opposite was turning right. Well he was either being very rude or seemed to think that he had right of way but he just pulled right in front of me and I had to jam on the achors.

Or he could just forgotton that he doesn't pay road tax!

I came into this world without my permssion and I'll leave it the exact same way!................Quothe the Raven..............Nevermore

Im not so fussed abou the road tax issue, as they dont genrate the wear and tear motorist does. Nor do they polute. But the lack of license plate and insurance pisses me off!!

There are inconsiderate, reckless cyclists.

But there are many, many more inconsiderate, reckless motorists.

I'm a cyclist, but I don't run red lights.

The number of times I've nearly been knocked off by idiot drivers is well into the double digits.

I've been actually knocked off my bike twice.
Once I was lucky and saw him coming so basically jumped off and my bike went under the car.
The other time I was clipped, went face first into the tarmac on Brixton Hill and broke a rib.

I agree that cyclists should obey the law and most cyclists do exactly that.
I think it comes down to respect or lack of it.

Some drivers believe they have more right to use the road than cyclists, don't look out for them and only see the cyclists who break the law, which further justifies their hatred of cyclists.
Conversely, some cyclists believe they are *the solution* to traffic/congestion problems, believe they have more of a right to the road than the drivers or at least that the rules do not apply to them and every time a car comes within 1/2 foot of them they shout and scream and carry on like idiots- or at least scowl and splutter with a false sense of superiority.

In truth though, we all have a right to use the road- you just need to be sensible about it.

One final thought though is that if all the cyclists currently riding about suddenly drove a car instead then the traffic would be significantly worse and we would never get anywhere.

LMAO!!!! I expect that does happen, although I've thankfully never seen it. Those mobility carts are also very dangerous, especially when it comes to young kids who rarely look where they're going on the footpath anyhow. An adult will see this and take a smart side-step to let the young child carry on (As his/her Dad roars "Watch where your going - Come 'ere" at the tot!! But, those carts are pretty difficult to shift and sometimes even see if the ctreet is packed. Whoever came up with the idea of those mobile carts - Chris Rock would have something to say about him!!!

I would say that the "Ultimate road menace" are drunk drivers and the uninsured. There are some dicks on bikes and horses, but it is far less than dicks in cars!

i almost knocked one down a few months ago, light was green for me at the cross roads so i was going through it and out of no where one comes out through the red light didnt even look at me, had to slam on the brakes and almost had a pile up with 2 other cars behind me. Also you get the ones that like to cycle in the middle of the road instead of there cycle lanes.

if they don't use the road rules properly then yes.

But they aren't a patch on horses - imagine making a car that jumped in the air or changed direction without warning whenever someone tooted their horn. Don't think that would get type approval for sale in the UK.

I did once see a cyclist filter to the front of a que, then stop in front of a truck at the head of the the que. When the lights changed the truck was quicker off the mark than the cyclist, who was below the level of the dash in the truck - so the driver hadn't seen him. Fortunately the actual wheels of the truck missed the guy, or he'd have been badly injured. As it was I think he was a bit scraped and bruised from being knocked off but nothing life threatening.

I have seen the aftermath of a couple of lurid accidents involving cyclists who blythely expected everyone else to make way for them - or who couldn't be bothered to stop at traffic lights. I had to inform the parents of one 14-year old accident victim, which was a bundle of laughs as you can imagine.

I'm all for mandatory cycling proficiency tests, complete with suspension/banning and seizure of bikes for those who transgress seriously or repeatedly.

Of course we all know the answer to this question. Some cyclists are dicks, some arn't.

On the road, no, on the pavements - without a shadow of a doubt.

Pedestrians should have the ultimate right of way, including cars, buses or whatever form of mechanical transport. The law should back them up instead of pandering to any other road user.

when i was in my last year of college, a lad came to college in his mums Honda Jazz, a guy was on the road came onto the pavement and clipped my mates wing mirror and it was hanging off and he carried on pedalling, my mate called him and the guy stopped and was saying he didnt do it after me and a few other blatantly saw it happen.

My mate said he wanted his phone number so he can pay for the damage but the guy refused, so my mate kicked hell out of spokes on his wheels
