RE: Too Many Back Exercises - 08 July 2008 23:36
At the moment I personally do:
Deadlifts
Wide pull ups
Cable row

So my advise to you would be drop one or two of the rowing movements if you want to cut down on the exercises a bit. Keep whichever you prefer.

However, if you like doing all 3, no reason to stop.

Hi mate,

Doesnt look too bad i dont think, remember the back is a large muscle group and can fairly take some caning.

What would say though is you have DB row and T-bar row, i maybe wrong but they could work pretty similar muscles

Seated row - is this lever or cable?

Do you not train traps at all? or do you do them on delt day (maybe you find heavy deads cover them)

I do (in a funny order):-

(Tues)
Cable Row 12,10,8 6
T-Bar 12,10,8,6

(Sat)
Weighted chins 3x10
CG lat pull downs 12,10,8
DB Shrugs 12,10,8

(Sun)
Deadlifts
Injured!!

Squat 170kgx1 105kgx25
Dead 200x1
Decline Bench 80x6
Wheels

I'd drop one of the rows. I'm assuming the db row is the one arm type, which is different enough to a t-bar to keep imo. Or you could drop the one arm row and keep a cable row with a narrow grip with the t-bar.

I would say drop one of the rowing exercises. 2 rowing movements is plenty, you don't really need to be doing 3, you're energy would be better spent on one of the other exercises you are doing.

Personally, I do 4 exercises for back, sometimes 5. I think like BencherRdg said, the back is a large muscle group and can take a bit more volume so I personally don't think there is anything wrong with the amount your doing.

Having said that, something like:

Weighed Chins/Pullups
Deadlifts
Rows (whatever type you prefer)

Is a decent routine for back I think.

Personally, I split my back workout into:
1 or 2 Rowing exercises (normally 1 freeweight, 1 machine/cable)
1 or 2 Pulldown exercises (same as above...weighted chins and pulldowns using different machines/grips)
1 Lowerback exercise (Deadlifts or Hyperextensions)

I vary the order in which I do them, so some weeks I might do Deadlifts first, some weeks last, some weeks I do hyperextensions instead. I normally stick to a set order for about 4 weeks and then change something, either the rotation I do them in or switch an exercise.

Most people do Deadlifts first as they like to do them when they are at their strongest. But IMO you shouldn't use that as a crutch and sometimes it's good to put them last or even in the middle of the workout when you're not as strong or energetic. This way, you are constantly challenging your body.

If you do 2 rowing exercise, you could vary which grip you use. So one exercise you do a wide or medium grip (such as Barbell Rows) and then do a close grip movement such a close grip cable rows or t bar rows. Same with the pulldown exercises; 1 wide/medium grip, 1 close grip.

I throw a set of heavy deadlifts once or twice a month on my back day. I feel better for it too.

Bench  - 100kg for 6

Deadlift - 160kg for 6 (w/ straps)

RE: Too Many Back Exercises - 09 July 2008 23:22
cheers for the opinions guys,

currently doing shrugs on delt day, [bencher Rdg] and the seated rowing is rope cable. My thoughts were to maybe to drop the db rowing. At the mo was looking to maybe cut my time in the gym down cos on a busy day it can take 1.30 hours which is maybe a lil too long. But will ave a rethink on next back/bi day and see what tickles my fancy.

any particular reasoning behind it jake or was it the easiest thing to type?

keep the t-bars if i was you, they are a great exercise and not enough people use them, they are fantastic for back growth.
Just joined a gym that has a t-bar set up and couldnt wait to use it again after 10 years of not using one.

If doing deads, I'd suggest reducing back routine, deads should pretty much kill you off.

If he's doing DB rows and seated rows then there is sweet FA need for another type of row. 3 different variations of rows? Plus deads and pull downs?

Overkill IMO. Not needed at this stage.

I would just do pull ups. 3 sets to failiure. BO BB rows, 4 sets 6-12 reps. Deads, 4 sets 6-12 reps.

Work hard on them, every set matters, enjoy growing like a bastard!
