If i don't turn into work one day, they work a man down and my work doesn't get done, but the emergency services can't do that, they need so many people per day, so someone on leave gets called in to cover at favourable rates of pay. So when I should work I go sick and you cover my shift and when you should work you go sick and I get to cover. Instant pay rise. Don't know if this still applies, but this is how it used to be. I used to drink with a bloke in the ambulance service and this is how they did it.
Never underestimate the positive effect of a kind word

Unless you have done the job you cannot fully appreciate just how stressful it is! I have several mates in the Police and what they have to deal with on a daily basis is shocking. The same goes for all of the emergency services. I know as a taxpayer it is not a great statistic to hear, but it is one that needs to be accepted. There will be 1 or 2 knackers taking the piss, but most will genuinely be sick. MT

Second most stressful job there is, maybe even first now the coal mines aren`t what they used to be so no I`m not surprised one bit, certainly working the inner cities, but some cushy little holiday resort in Cornwall, well my disabled Mother could do that on her own. Some people forget ( even the Police themselves sometimes) they are just people with the same coping mechanisms as everybody else, some better than others but eventually if you are exposed to enough stressful events then something will give.

I can't remember the exact figure but I think 1000% is less than 1% of the total. Most places will have 5%.

What other job do you routinely, every day, work with the homeless winos who carry goodness-knows-what, fight with drunks several times a week and work ceasless shifts that screw up your bodies own rythms??

I interact with the police daily in my job and they take a lot of shiit. Must make it hard to trust people too because basicly almost everyone they deal with will be lying to them. Plus as mentioned, the shifts they work are very oddly designed. Really haphazzard, they dont just do a week of nights then a week of days, it's all mixed up every week.

I have a few train at my gym - and some get proper stressed and signed off sick when bad sh1t happens. And by bad sh1t, I mean stuff that would have me puking by the road side and suffering nightmares for weeks after. So I have every sympathy with those involved in the nastier side of life - I'd be surprised if it didn't affect them emotionally, no matter how "tough" they may be or appear to be. There's only one that gets my t1ts - a traffic plod who is perpetually off sick from stress because he gets abuse for booking people. I have no sympathy for him and his speed camera at all.

while there will be some who are simply "dossing" etc as you would get in any job id imagine the majority may have issue to deal with due to various incidents on the job

I think youl find that in most jobs where major stressful events may occur (Like having to be at the scene of a car crash where somebodies intestines are spilt over other passengers who are also dead) people will take time off for stress. This is NOT everyday oh no my workmates hate me, kind of stress, its events that can change you as a person. Its usually after events like this, that coppers take time off, and these types of things are occuring everyday. Add to that, the **** they put up with everyday, and it makes sense to me. Try to remember that they arent soldiers, they arent trained to deal with that type of thing. And they will likely react exactly how you would, even the most hardened of police will see things that will make them want to be sick, or so ive been told by officers many a time. I speak to many beat officers, as well as a few in specialist units, and these figures do not suprise me in the least. I have quite a few things to look forward to apparently.

one minute you go from dealing with a 10 year old kid nicking some sweets from a shop, to a suicide were someone has blown their head off with a shotgun and you have to find it, deal with it and tell the family. the next stop is someone arguning with you cos they weren't using thier mobile phone and your just picking on them, further road the corner you turn up at a car accident were 3 generations of a family have all been killed and your first there having to reassure mum who is trapped in the drivers seat screaming her head off cos her 2 year old is lying motionless covered in blood dead in the child seat! yes all in a days work but hell im dammed if i dont think about it when i go home!

ORIGINAL: Melonccfc If you cant do the job then dont do it! Appreciate it's a stressfull job but they have a decent pay package and many others have difficult jobs too What cock! Pay is not the be all and end all and just precisely where do you find these unfeeling robots that can deal with some of what's been listed without thinking about it or being stressed? Then what do you pay them? Back then the fire crew were striking the Mail and other papers were discussing the topic hotly. On a slow day with the lads sitting in the station watching porn or sleeping £30K+ seems too much but then what price or hourly rate do you give to an fire officer who rescues your child from a burning house? Just what should someone be paid, ambulance, police, fireman or soldier to deal with someone torn in half in a road crash or after a bomb? Other jobs which have stress in them tend not to be, to put a fine point on it, so in your face with life's problems. Air traffic controllers and tube and train drivers are on a similar level (about £30k or so). They are paid well not for dealing with **** per se but with responsibility. Many years ago my late father was an ambulance man and had literally been in the job weeks. He was at a hospital casualty when he saw the remains of a woman, pregnant with twins, whose car had rear ended a lorry. Her car was wrecked and her gut had been torn open. All concerned were dead. He came home and cried in my mums arms. Find me someone who'd deal with that image, not on film, video or the net but for real. No pay is enough and yes it is human to be stressed. As I said earlier the figure of 1000 off with stress is less than the national average as a percentage. That means there are more office and shop workers off with stress than the same percentage of police officers.

Filthy Pigs getting paid £150 a day and they cant even turn up for work. Blaming it on stress, anxiety and or depression... Bloody disgrace no wonder this country's going downhill. Makes me sick to my stomach, pussies the lot of them. I mean no offence to women I mean theres alot of strong women out there but everyday im seeing more and more feeble women in the Police Force, I mean wtf how is a 9st fat women going to takedown a 14st beast say martial arts but have of these forget about martial arts the day they were taught it. Look at Americas Policeman all musclebound beasts.
