Who's strongest!?
-
11 July 2008 10:40
My training partner and i both bench press 83.5kg for 3 x 6 at the moment. That's 13st 1 pound. Both are pb's for both of us (might not seem a lot to some of you!) I weigh 12st 7 and he weighs 14 st 4. Does that make me a much stronger person than him??! I want your opinions for some banter next time we bench lol

Find your one rep max on benching, squat and deadlift. Add them up. The one with the highest total is "the stronger person".

Considering your BW I would say that your lift was the more impressive lift, relativly speaking! Why don't you both go for a 1RM then you can sort out bragging rights

Actually I must point out that comparisson of strength based on unit of BW is a poor way of comparing lifts from indivuals with high variance of mass.

I wouldn't want to try 1 rep max, risk of injury, plus i always fiind my 2nd or 3rd rep easier than the first, especilally pressing

ORIGINAL: iaink risk of injury No more than doing a 3 RM! Yeah, i'm just saying that i dont think i could do a 1 rep max, because i would always be able to do another if you get what i mean as i find the first rep the hardest apart from the last say on a set of 6. Perhaps that's just me?

ON that movement, you are stronger lb for lb.
Nothing contributes so much to tranquilizing the mind as a steady purpose - a point on which the soul may fix its intellectual eye.

Bodyweight and strength are 2 completely different things. U bench press the same weight, so u r equally strong. 2 many people use bodyweight as an excuse for being weak.

If you lift the same weights, you are the same strength. Too many variables regarding bodyfat, height, frame size and even things such as bone density etc to judge who's stronger per lb.

ORIGINAL: Jake ON that movement, you are stronger lb for lb. What the hell does this mean, you are either stronger or you are not. Don't complicate matters more than you have to. For example my mate Joe has a best competition squat of 305 kgs I have one of 322.5 so I am stronger than Joe. Joe weighed 90 kgs when he did his lift and I weighed 132 when I did mine so some numpties now think that Joe is stronger then me, maybe not pre se but lb for lb, whatever that means Joe was 36 years old when he did his squat I was 51, so am I stronger year for year, and does my year for year advantage cancel out his lb for lb, the numpties now get confused and fall over. It's this simple, whoever lifts most is the strongest. If Joe ran the hundred metres in 10 seconds and I did it in 10.5 would I be "faster" than him because of my heavier bodyweight ?
Never underestimate the positive effect of a kind word

RE: Who's strongest!?

Not that it matters But ultimately, the person who lifts more weight is the strongest. However, if you are making a comparison on a lb for lb scale. Your training partner is nearly 2 stone heavier and relatively speaking you'd expect him to be able to lift more weight than a lighter guy. But it's not as simple as that as there are a lot of other factors to consider, not just bodyweight. Your friend could be carrying 2 stone of extra bodyfat! but you may actually carry a similar amount of lean muscle mass. You may have better development in one area which enables you to be relatively strong on a particular exercise or may have another advantage due to your bodystructure/leverage. It's kind of a pointless debate, but I do believe strength is quite often relative to how much you weigh aswell. Afterall, that's why they have weight classes in Powerlifting. But when all is said and done, the guy who lifts the most weight is the strongest regardless. 2 many people use bodyweight as an excuse for being weak. Maybe so, but then you could turn that around. For example; say if you had to compare yourself with someone who was 2 or 3 stone lighter than you who is lifting the same weight as you are, what would your excuse be?...lol 10 stone guy benches 90kg, 20 stone guy benches 95kg. Whos stronger?? The 20 stone guy, he lifts more weight, end of. Couldn't agree more mate :) There is always gonna be someone out there who is bigger, stronger, faster..etc. than you are. So I say rather than worrying about who is the stronger guy or massaging your ego, the only person you've got to compete against is yourself. Don't worry about what he's lifting, encourage him to improve - yes....but focus on what your doing. It's not a competition. I'm reasonably strong on some lifts, piss weak on others. I don't really care because the point is, I'm constantly aiming to improve and am never satisfied. I'm not the biggest or strongest guy in the gym. On a lb for lb scale you could say I am equally or even stronger on some lifts than some of the bigger guys. But the truth is, they are throwing up more weight than me....so they are much stronger overall. On a lb for lbs scale maybe equal, but who really cares about that. Peace

as you get bigger your pound for pound ratings go down. the best pound for pound lifters are usually very short people who do not weigh much. andy bolton pound for pound is not great if you compare it against some lighter weight lifters. However he has still got the 1000 pound dead. Thats what he be rembered for and not his weight ratio.

I dont have an excuse and i dont make excuses when i see sumeone 20 stone lifting maybe 10kg more than me, dont hear me sayin oh but im 4 stone lighter, if i was 20 stone id be lifting............ thats all crap. And to be honest i dont think theres too many people lighter than myself in the uk that are lifting more, and im talking gym lifts totalled, not the powerlifting 3.
