Post Workout Supplements - 11 July 2008 11:47
Hi all,

After a bit of advice and hardly use this forum but...

Whats the best/what do you use for post wrkout supplements?
I currently only have a protein shake when coming out of the gym.

Was thinking of buying some Vitargo as this seems to of had good reviews as a post workout supplement, or was thinking of buying some maltidextrin and glutamine for post workout.
A few people in My Gym 'Monsters' in Cheshunt swear by Vitargo as a post workout supplements or something like a quick carb or glucose

Any thoughts ?

I am currently cutting until about late august then another bulk during the winter. My diet is not too bad and cardio is aroun 2 hours a week at the moment just aiming to loose a little fat for during the summer and currrently around 17 stone 2

Cheers for help

Nick

probably the best post workout supplement is something along these lines;

http://www.bodybuildingwarehouse.co.uk/pro-recover---post-workout-recovery-drink-34-p.asp

its a 2-1 ratio of fast acting carbs and proteins. Ideal for post workout.

Will be trying some of that myself once my current pwo supp runs out. PRO recover after workout and then PRO pep before bed. Will be looking like you clubber before I know it :D

Clubber do they do a pre workout product that you would recommend? I know you highly rate the CNP products so im sure there will be something there I can use. Looking for energy and serious pumps :) ta

pre workout i usually have 3 slices of wholemeal toast washed down with a strong cup of black coffee, have this about 30mins before training.

some days tho if the weathers really hot or im struggling slightly i'll buy a Pro-Napalm from the gym, only a quid and works a treat.

as for pump products ive only tried BSN Endorush so cant really comment much on that area.

I believe they are high in simple sugars but not so high in protein. Taste OK
It would be just OK for post workout, but there is not nearly enough protein IMO

Yeah, Vanilla is delicious.

But they are far from optimum in terms of protein and they are not exactly the most cost efficient.

But once in a while after a tough Saturday morning hill sprints session, I'll pick one up on my way home as a treat.

You need very little, if any, post workout carbs as a decent whey/amino conbimation will be enough to stimulate enough of an insulin response.

I'd look towards any anti catabolic/cortisol reducing and ATP regenetive supplements; so the likes of creatine, glutamine, hmb, d ribose, okg, bcaa's/eaa's.

Yes, anti-catabolic /glycogen replenishing agents such as L-Glutamine are important post workout. I'd be inclined to take a protein/carbohydrate supplement - e.g. whey/maltodextrin within that 30 minute window of opportunity also.

Whey is a generally a given unless you follow a bcaa/ess protocol instead.

Maltodextrin as a carb post workout isn't that quick to be absorbed so dextrose or waxy starch maize would be better choices IMO.

My point was/is that why use carbs post workout? A token amount of say up to 10g would be useful as a shuttling effect but in terms of raising blood insulin levels protein and/or amino's will achieve this and to be honest this would be more useful intra workout than post.

Unless you're bulking and need the extra calories I see little point and gain.
