free weights use balance muscles to keep form propley, with machines it isolates the muscle and it dont use balance muscles.
i personaly use machines and free weights, so one week ill do flys with dumbells then the next on the machine.
worth going to the sports centre at your college seeing if they got a gym, it only cost us 5pound for a year

haha, erm, usly on lat pull down machines at the gym you have somethin to put your knees under.
what you could try is rapping your legs round the front leg if you know what i mean, or sit normal one leg either side, strap your self down to the bench using a belt or two
im not sure how much weight them cables can take should say, if i was you i would get my form right, do each rep slow, and at the half way point hold it for a few seconds, wider the grip usaly harder it is

yes his form is very good, im not sure if you be able to stack weight on that much that why i say do it slower and hold at half way point, you will feel it more.
try not swing your body back much, sometimes i dont at all when doing it slow and hold, feel it really burn
