Is protein pre cardio used for energy? - 12 July 2008 10:08

I've read on here some people recommend doing cardio on an empty stomach and others suggest protein or some other form of amino acids (glutamine,BCAA) should be consumed to help prevent muscle loss.

If you consume a protein shake before a cardio session, is it possible that protein could be oxidised and used for energy before fat reserves are utilised?

Doubtful that it'll be converted into glucose that quickly.

Also protein intake needs to be in excess for this to happen.

I would say it is dependent on your overal goal from the cardio.... fitness whilst bulking, cutting, etc...

If i'm cutting then i personally will do it with nothing beforehand, just a glass of water.

Bench - 125kg x 2

In my case I am cutting. The reason I asked is that I have read pretty much two opposing views one saying whey can be converted to glycogen and another study saying that pre workout whey or amino acids can in fact increase the rate at which the body burns fat during cardio.

No, but you will more than likely use stored glycogen in favour of stored fat due to the rise in insulin and the state of insulin sensitivity the body will be in on waking. Genetics ultimately determine how much of each energy substrate is utilised, but adding a form of food into the equation will certainly make it more difficult to shift BF.

They whey shake is going to get burned whatever because its availible unless intensity is silly low and even then I imagine it'l go but if your body is chasing amino's then hopefully it will use the whey rather than muscle.

I think having whey or l-glut is safer before "unfueled" CV but each to there own.Its a endless debate.
