60%-70% Zone When Running? - 12 July 2008 15:37
I have just recently purchased a heart rate monitor.

This morning i tried it out when i went for my usual AM cardio.

I found it impossible to stay in the fat burning zone when running. I could only do it when walking slowly.

Is it essential to stay within the zone when trying to loose bdyfat?

My average was around 89%. Even then i wasnt pushing myself.

In total i burned around 750 cals for a 51 minutes run.

Thanks

How did you calculate the 89%? Just that would put me over 170 BPM which is the highest I've achieved for an hours rowing (which was hard! Normally I'd train at c.155 BPM).

Your current efforts sound just fine. I think of the 'fat burning zone' as a minimum target, and if I go higher then my body will adjust to take care of itself well enough anyway. If that weren't the case then HIIT wouldn't work.

Also, if you're running for 51 minutes, make sure you do a warm up and stretch beforehand, take on some water during and after the run, and do a proper warm down. You'll feel mentally fresher for it and reduce your chances of injury.

How do you calculate your fat burning mode? Is by age height and weight? Sorry for sounding dumb.

You'll find most people just do a fast walk when trying to do SSCV for fatloss.

IMO I'd ignore the calorie indication and just do some cardio for 30 or 40 mins...

and also ignore the 60% to 70% zone as it can be out for most people, just run untill you are slightly out of breath and sweating.
