Weight of the bar? - 13 July 2008 15:22
I was wondering do people include the weight of the bar when they state how much they are lifting? Having used the free bar today i couldn't lift as much as when i was using the smith machine.
The weight of the bar is 12.2kg so if i loaded 80kg onto it would that mean im lifting 90.2kg?

Unless magic space fairies are lifting the bar for you, then yes, you include it.

For the smith machine. The bars do not normally weigh as much as olympic barbells.
plus smith machines are counter balanced.

also smith machine do vary. some straight up and some angled.

With smith machine, leg press. I count the number of plates I put on. But if I went to a new gym. I would not think as I can put 3*20kg plates on leg press. that at new gym I will get 3*20kg plates on for same number of reps.

You lift it, so you count it.

Standard oly bars are 20kgs.

I can lift more on the free bar than the smith machine at my gym. Smith machines do vary tho, sum r more difficult than others.

It actually weighed at 12.2kg, its a slightly smaller bar than an olympic bar.

So wolverine198324 you say you can bench 130 for a reps im guessing that includes 110 plus the bar? Just using as an example!

7' Oly bar = 20kg
5' Oly bar = 12.5kg
EZ bar - 7.5kg

Smith machine = anything from 0-20kg. Unless it's stated on it it anywhere, weights lifted on the Smith Machine are usually just the plates on the bar. For anything using a barbell it's the total amount of weight lifted. So you're correct in the Wolverine example.

I dont understand why it would even occur to someone to not count the bar
