Do oats need cooking?
-
14 July 2008 11:51
Now this isn't a question for myself as I blend my oats and drink them raw in a shake. I didn't even realise they needed cooking. I just thought you warmed them up to make them soft. The thing is, my wife has started giving our 7 month old baby a bit of my readybrek mixed up with his formula milk. She only microwaves it for 10 secs, so not to risk it being red hot, as she does with all his food. Her parents are saying thats not long enough to cook it and we're giving him it raw. Is this the case? Can it do any harm? What does the cooking process actually do other than warm it up????

it still has to be broken down further in the stomach.. and remember little ones dont have strong digestive systems like us i'd cook it then just give it plenty of time to cool down.. dont wanna cause her/him any discomfort

Rolled oats (and products made from them) are steamed, so they can be eaten after being soaked in water/milk. Pinhead & steel-cut oats are much harder and should be cooked.

Cheapo oats are rolled oats so should be edible after blending & soaking.

I never cook my oats, cant eat more than probably 20g when they are hot, can probably eat closer to 100g when they are uncooked. These are rolled oats in milk, i dont soak em for that long tho just treat like any other cereal, is there a problem with doing this?

Oat FAQ's 1. Can I eat oats RAW? Yes, with an explantion. Most of the oats that you see out there are not really raw. Oats are a very soft, moist grain, and they go rancid quickly, so manufacturers steam them at about 212 degrees to set the flavors so they won't go bad. So even a whole kernal oat grain will not sprout because it has been killed by this steaming process unless you were lucky enough to find a real live raw oat grain.
