Lean Gains.... - 14 July 2008 12:16
i've been training on and off for about 8 years now. Been MIA for last 18 months and recently getting back into it. I've got my diet back to the oldskool and loving my training.

I do weights 4 times a week and cardio on off days. My calorie intake is quiet high as im trying to build mass but at the same time doing cardio to limit amount of fat I gain.

I've always had different opinions with this kind of stuff but am I ok doing Cardio on the same day as weights session? i.e Cardio AM and Weights PM?? Or will i be burning carbs which wll be needed for my session.

loads diff opinions on this. cardio am is great for fat burning, if you having a good diet all day then weights pm you will be fine imo.

it has been shown to slow the process of muscle recovery and energy for weights doing it same day because the carbs protein etc needed else where insted maxium going to you ie chest session.
have a look through past posts

i only do cardio in the summer so im lean for the sun, then through the winter i bulk up trying to maxmise my muscle growth gains.

you may find this useful:

Longer duration, lower intensity aerobic exercise tends to impact muscle growth
negatively and has less of an effect on fat loss. Though you may burn calories, this type
of aerobic exercise derives the majority of the calories burned from lean tissue and less
from fat. This is exactly what you don't want.

To minimize cardio's negative effects on muscle growth you must schedule your aerobic
sessions as distant in time from your weight training as possible. This means DO NOT do
both cardio and weight training in the same workout. Don't do cardio immediately before
you weight train and don't do cardio immediately after you weight train. This is how most
people do it and it's completely wrong and detrimental to optimal muscle growth.

Your cardio exercises should be done approximately 8 to 12 hours before
or after you weight train. Never do cardio immediately before or immediately after your workout.

This means if you train in the morning you do your cardio at night. If you train at night
then do your cardio in the morning. And to take it a step further, you should preferably
do your cardio on your non weight training days
