muscle quality - 15 July 2008 13:11
hard to decide what i wanna ask here

basically im wondering how does muscle quality differ from 2 people of equal size,

1)one has gained that size from high intensity low rep low volume work

2)one has gained that size from high intensity high rep low volume work

3)one has gained that size from low intensity high rep high volume work

im wondering does person 3 gain a lot more glycogen fat and water storeage within the muscle and therefore quickly loose size when traing is ceased

does person 1 gain better quality denser (myofibrillar) muscle that stays with him longer after training ceases

and is person 2 fall somwhere in between (sarcoplasmic) where muscle that reamins with the trainer for a time falling somwhere between the two above when training ceases

??????? i hope that makes sense

also can 2 people train the same yet gain different quality muscle??

i ask because my old training partner grew like a weed without getting strong at all yet when he stopped training his size disappeared faster than a fart in the wind and when he starts agin it appears repidly however like i said without much strength....... i am stronger than he is, not as big, and my size will stays long time when i stop training

Nothing contributes so much to tranquilizing the mind as a steady purpose - a point on which the soul may fix its intellectual eye.

i think i get what your asking as its something i've pondered myself mainly based on things ive noticed in other trainees, much like yourself.

The guys i know that go proper heavy with low reps seems to develop a more dense look to them. There muscle looks more permanent and less "pumped." As you said it looks like if they stopped training the muscle would stick with them. There growth seems slightly lower than the high rep guys but as i said more permanent.

The guys that only do high rep stuff with lighter weight going for the pump seems to get a more pumped look - their muscle looks kinda inflated and as if it will diminish/atrophy quickly if they stop training.

I have no idea about the science etc... but its just something ive observed.

i tried to find examples to explain what i ment:

Powerlifter who looks thick/dense as hell.

Arnie who sports the more pumped look (imo):

I could, and probably am talking absolute rubbish here!

EDIT: another good example of the dense thing i was on about would be Dorian who went very heavy i believe and had a really grainy stone like look to him blah blah blah..... i really am rambling crap here.

barbuda, your on the right lines

all i can think is about the different types of hypertrophy

sarcoplasmic increases glycogen and fat storeage within the muscle as well assome protein

myofibrillar increases mainly protein within the muscle

which one would be less dense and easier to for the body to break up when in need of energy?? sarcoplasmic is my answer

Thats a good query. Thats what i need at min thicker denser look, trainin at mo consists of high intensity, low set volume at about failure bein 8 or so reps

I was reading that higher reps tend to focus on the other parts of the muscle cells (stores) and increase size. Lower reps tend to increase 'contractile proteins' (which make you stronger).

So someone who does lower rep exercises will look 'denser', but maybe not as big as someone who does higher reps. Strength is likely to be the opposite.
Which is why powerlifters can shift a lot of weight and still have a bit of a smaller build (compared to a BB).

Lewis

well strength is also linked to neurological processes however that is the reason that higer reps = bigger muscles i am curious as to whether higher rep (storeage) muscle is lost quicker and easier than lower rep (contractile) muscle

muscle maturity, genetics and drugs

very hard to debate this when you consider the above and look at the two picture examples.

All i know is that when i gain some strength for example my tricep gets a fluffed feel to it, i know its growing yet i know that if i stop training that extra bit of fullness will disappear within 2 week.

now if i carry on training beyond this, carrying on gaining at this point the tricep no longer feels fluffed up but starts hardening up and before long it feels harder at its new size evryday of the week even on low carbs.

then i get to a point when im confident that the muscle mass/size has matured and will not run away in two weeks of not training.

im not sure what bearing the type of training has on the muscle, although i feel aslong as you continually overload the muscle it will adapt regardless of rep range.
If you never expect anything from anyone you will never be disappointed.
