Oats make me sleepy - 16 July 2008 02:03
does anyone else get this problem with oats? Half an hour or so after eating oats i get really really tired and feel like i need to take a nap.

i've tried a few different kinds of oats, like rolled oats, organic oats but they all give me the same results.

does anyone else get this with oats?

its kind of a bummer, because i love having porridge in the morning, or adding them to a shake.

rice i usually only eat basmati or brown and i tend to be fine with it. white bread like french sticks sometimes leaves me feeling a bit sleepy, i've not noticed it with potatos or pasta

I can really feel it when i have oats in a shake,

I notice it most if i have a shake at mid day with like , whey, oats banana, peanut butter, natural low fat yogurt all blended together. I'd be wide awake before i have it, then half an hour later i want to go and take a nap.

u are carb intolerant which means that ur body can't handle carbs and stores them as fat so limit ur carb intake

I think you have a point, i seem to put on fat really easliy especially if i've cut back on doing any sort of cardo.

is there ways round this? what sort of carbs should i be eating?

Mate you dont know you intolerant so forget that for now,if it a big bowl of carbs with not alot else then you might get a bit sleepy,I do,if its less oats and some protein too,it eases up.Carbs intolerences are thrown around 4 everything when sometimes the culprit is just the size of the meal.Experiment with less or at different times.

Surprised white french stick doesnt do the same, you are not having a tanker full of oats are you?

For complex bulking carbs mate,I'd use.

Basmati or brown rice ideally as you say.[I use my uncle ben cause I'm lazy].
Brown wholemeal /granary /burgen soya linseed is my fav but quite carb light.
Wholewheat pasta or maybe egg pasta
Quinoa [type of grain]
Baby spuds
Oats
weetabix
shredded wheat.

Of course your whole diet might need a update if you are not gaining enough muscle vs fat.

I don't think its down to over eating, this morning for example i had 7 wheat a bix and 2 apples and a protien shake with milk and i was fine. its definatly oats that do it, And i dont even need to have that much of then. If you take your avarage shaker cup i only usually fill it with about 1/8th of oats. thats not that many.

That's the point though, the moring shake is not really a large meal, its only a small handful of oats, some whey, a banana and some skimmed milk. Some times i might put some peanut butter in it or some cottage cheese or nautral yogurt, but at the end of the day its only a shaker cup full. i can sit down and eat a steak, some veg and some rice and i'm fine. or maybe a little sleepy.

Oats totally knock me out though.

Please explain the metabolic steps of this rather "magical" pathway.
