Cant Squat - 16 July 2008 08:26
For the last two and a half weeks ive been unable to squat - a shame as its my favourite exercise. When my knee bends down to parralel its really painful where the muscle at the bottom of the thigh joins the knee cap. Ive never had an injury thats lasted this long and it still hurts now. I do lots of running should i stop this for now too even though it doesnt cause any pain in the effected area? Has anyone else had this same problem? How long did it take to heal? If its not better in a week im thinkin of seeing a doctor.

is the pain in both knees or just one? if it's just one then you may have partially torn a ligament, or perhaps have severe tendonitis. It's unlikely to be anything really serious, because if you had a meniscal tear within the knee you would have trouble walking and be in almost constant pain.

It sounds like a tendon problem, you could try the following:
Alternate putting a bag of peas or an ice pack on the area, then a warm hot water bottle (20 mins of one, then 20 mins of the other). Ibuprofen can help.

I used to have similar problems in that area when I used to compete in Judo, and I found rubbing Tiger Balm (little pot of white stuff available from health shops and most Boots) into the area helped a lot too.

and like you say, if no improvement in 10 days, best go see your GP mate.
Yes, I know I am smaller than you, and yes, I am lifting smaller weights. But I am busting my arse in this gym three times per week without fail, so give me some god-damn respect!

Cheers for the advice mate. Its just the left knee thats hurting the other ones fine. I should of rested it last week but i carried on with a heavy squat session anyway which was both stupid and painful. It only hurts when bending the leg pretty far back basically the bottom squat position. Do you think light jogging would be a bad idea?

Hey mate yeah I would defo say that light jogging will only aggravate the situation more, probably best to leave it for at least a week and keep a feel for the mobility and pain levels then before going back into the compound squats again.

Maybe try some stretching to see if you can realise the pressure within the area concerned, I used to get injuries from street running years ago and it was hard to give up while I was healing, don't want to really bugger your knee up as you need it for squatting later
