squats with knee wraps - hiding a problem?
-
16 July 2008 19:11
Hi, I've been having problems lately with knee pain when squatting - posted about this a few weeks ago...anyway, I've bought some knee wraps and they have really supported my knees very well, I can't feel any pain when squatting now.....but, doing everyday things - squatting down to pick things up for example, my knees still feel rather achey...so are the knee wraps just masking a problem? If i can't feel pain when squatting should i still continue? I'm thinking of the future years, I'm worried about wearing my knees out

As above plus warm up properly with some low impact cardio for at least 5 minutes (going straight to heavy squats from cold is not a good idea!). If you work in an office, then don't let your legs sit idle in the same position for long, same if you have a long commute by train. These are the two areas I used to get problems until I recognised the real causes.

i personally really dont like using knee wraps and dont see any need for them. been upto 220kg with no problems. another pointer, dont sit with your legs crossed and dont sit with one leg under you, neither is that good for you. i keep doing it as it is comfortable and it does give me achey knees sometimes.

Thanks guys.. I ride the stationery bike for 5-8mins prior to any squats and use the wraps on every set from warm up to the heavy sets.. But because i can 'feel' my knees throughout the rest of the week I'm concerned, if you think about it, all that weight puts huge pressure on your knees and it just can't be good for them...but i love doing them and really don't want to stop, but if they're are aching now then what the hell am i going to be like in 20 years!?

Overall, I'd say using wraps would be a good idea. But you should still probably ask to see a specialist about the knees. Always worth getting it checked out if you have access to healthcare!

If i went to see my doctor I'm very sure like most doctors he'd say 'drop the squats'. Are your knees supposed to be stiff and achy after squatting for a few days afterwards? They improve after 4-5 days i suppose..

They improve after 4-5 days i suppose.. Muscles around the knee achy? Yes. Knee joints themselves achy? Probably not. Personally I wouldn't take 'drop the squats' from my GP any more than i'd take 'drop exercise'. Ask to see someone who knows specifically about your area of concern.

If your knees hurt when you squat without wraps and not when you squat with them, it seems that the proper course of action is pretty obvious :). A lot of people can't squat comfortably without knee support, and frankly if I were in the other camp I wouldn't be trying to see how long I could keep loading my knees heavy before the pain started. Wraps make sense.

Yes, during the squats with straps i feel no knee ache/discomfort, however, its the next few days afterwards thats the problem - this is why i feel I could be just hiding a knee problem!? Maybe a physio could help me...
