Sumo vs Conventional DL - 16 July 2008 23:28
What're the main differences in muscle activation with these?

I'd like to try them as they look a little more lower back friendly than conventional deadlifts - are they as effective with regards to mass building? They look quite glute heavy

They'll be effective at gaining mass in the muscles your using.

You think 'lift', they activate. What more do you need to know

Try sumo and see how you get on. Get the starting position right or else you'll just conventional pull with a wide stance.

They are easier on the back but much more difficult off the floor.

Mainly swift.

My first plan is to knock the weight right down on normal deads and sort my form out as i think that was the main reason i messed my lower back up a while ago.

If that doesn't work, i'm keen to try sumo's as i've read they're much more lower back friendly.

Not sure if you look on ukmuscle at all but there is member called 'con' on there.

have a look at his back development is all im saying.

i asked him about deads and he said use minimal leg drive, slow it down and squeeze the upper back at the top of each rep. go hard but keep form spot on.

this guy pulled 300kg as a junior (read 16 years old)

I find sumo's to be a lot more leggy, however I dont have much experience with them and because of this I cant use as much weight as conventional. I think it takes a while to get the hip positioning just right.

Maybe from a BB point of view pulling off a deficit would be good?

At this level Ak, it wont make any ****ing difference. Do whatever one you're better built for.

Sumo will have more hips involves. honestly though, you wont see much of a difference between the 2.

he pulled a lot more, 333kg World junior 90kg record at 19 years old, not 16 years old, and his arms are the longest you'll ever see, hes one of those whos naturally built for deadlift so you cant really give advice comparing him to the average joe because it doesnt work, he doesnt need to use leg drive as his arms are sooooo long

get form good, slow it down?? hope you dont mean the decent? if you mean pull slowly upwards then fine, I agree it works for a lot of people this way to keep it normal pace temp as long as you pull it up with good form, but dont intentionally try to pull it up very slow

yes deadlifts will improve your back development, everyone who powerlifts or does deads know this, and is one of the best exercises for overall strength and overall muscle development.

Also I find sumo deads after only few sessions being easier on the back and my deads have improved, it feels a lot more leg glutes and wide stance leg strength, so I figure (dont take my word on it) if you got good wide stance deep squat strength, your sumos will improve

Thats the thing - i'm built for normal deads quite well (long limbs, short-ish torso) but as soon as the weight gets heavy my legs go up sh1t creek and its all lower back.

I'll give both a go at some point and see which is better

If your legs are weak, bring up your leg strength and your DL will improve.
