blending linseeds - 17 July 2008 11:32
I currently store my linseeds in a container in the fridge and blend ~ 25gms into my morning shake every morning.

If i just blasted the whole 500g bag at once in the blender and stored them the same would the nutrients stay stable or would they degrade once the seeds have been grounded?? I am wanting to do this cos i would like to use linseeds at other times of the day but don't wanna be getting the blender out everytime.

Yeah you could do that.

I tend to blend 100-200g to keep me going for the week.

They sell ground linseeds in re-sealable 500g bags so it would just be the same as keeping them.

Id keep them in a air-tight container in the fridge though just in case.

They work out very expensive like this mate, anything from £5 to £10 for a 400-500g bag.

I pay £3.40 for a 1kg bag of organic linseeds in a small health shop near me.

You could just store your seeds in a pepper mill, and then grind them over what ever you want. Salad, porridge, into your shake.

Best not to grind up to much at one time, as the seeds can go rancide once the oil is released

I blend 500g of seeds at a time and keep the powder in an air-tight earthenware jar at room temperature. There's no oil released and the powder doesn't go rancid.

I just got 2kg of brown linseeds for £2.60 from my local pet-shop.

Doesn't the fat oxidise and become less useful/damaged? Or is that a myth?

If any oil/fat was released by blending linseeds, it would oxidise and go rancid. As no significant amount of oil/fat is released, it doesn't.
