Being told how to squat by Ian Beale.
-
23 July 2008 11:10
Well not THE Ian Beale, wooden actor of the popular BBC soap but a lookalikey. Anyway I was doing a set of squats, going for 10 reps and this bloke wearing lycra shorts (who wears lycra??) says to me mid squat,"your knees shouldn't pass your toes" Now this P'd me off no end as I was mid squat and kind of put me off. After I finished I said but you can't get your thighs parralel to the floor if you don't go passed your toes can you? I would of had some respect for him if he had looked like he had ever lifted a weight in his life, but he obviously hadn't. At which point he walked off. I always go low with what I thought was perfect form. Is This bloke right about the toes thing??

In general he is right. Nothing worng with your knees coming forward, but for most if your knees go beyond your toes then your not squating well. It probably means you are not sitting back enough or squating 'between' your legs.

If you sitting back into the squat, going deep and squating between your legs... and your toes still go over your knees then fair one. However if you breaking at the kness first, going straight down and squating onto your legs then you should make some changes. Ironically I had 'Ian Beale' as a nick name in the late 90's LOL! For no other reason than my 1st name is iain!

This highlights a point..... 1) Lycra is almost unforgivable 2) I am (at 5.11, 84kg, ~12%bf at the moment) not exactly residing in the 'swole', 'jaked', 'ripped' or 'buffed' categories, yet miraculously I am able to give some half decent advice about training. In general - listen to the advice, think about it, try it and then judge. (...but only if they person giving it doesn't have a pony little ginger mustache)
