surname change after marriage....
-
23 July 2008 13:12
if you asked your partner to marry you and she said yes but wouldnt take your name, how would you react to that? would it bother you enough not to marry her? would you take her surname if she asked you to marry her?

Bit strange. Is there any particular reason, such as an unfortunate surname or anything? Don't think I'd be too happy about it.

I could completely understand if I had a really odd surname. In a place I used to work a woman was called Mrs ***** C0ckaday! She must get sniggered at all the time

I could understand it if you were a "Pratt" or a "Butt" - but other than that.....no. Incidentally, I used to work with an Alan Butt, who prior to his marriage, changed his surname to his mothers maiden name (Evans). It was pretty obvious this was because his wife did not want to be the Butt of any jokes ('scuse the pun). May I ask if you are presently with this predicament ?

^^^ I've never been a fan of these Double-Barrel names either. I know a few women who kept their maiden names as they own their own businesses.
I admire many people for how they live their lives But the people I admire the most are those people who refuse to give up.

i'm not with this predicament, i'm a long way off marriage if ever! its just something that cropped up. i used to date a fairly hardcore feminist, we used to clash on many things and ideas/opinions but when the subject of marriage arose and the woman taking the blokes name we agreed, much to her surprise. basically i dont really understand why blokes feel the woman SHOULD automatically take their name after marriage, it seems rather draconian to me. when this came up in conversation with my friends, not one of them gave a good enough reason as to why they expected it "its tradition" was the general answer, tradition also states the bloke must be the bread winner though, so it was quite a interesting debate. just wondered how people on here viewed it.

If she wouldnt take my name then she wouldnt be my wife, simple as that. No double barelled names either with a '-' used either.

(in all seriousness yes, in certain circumstances it'd be different) No luck on the holiday yet, infact im still trying to contact the surgeon who botched me up. I cant even find where he is atm and even his secretary has gone missing, thats the fukcing NHS for you... And its p1ssing me right off knowing that everything lies in his hands aswell.

My wife kept her maiden name, it doesn't bother me. What will be tricky is when we have kids....

I had a double inguinal hernia op 4 weeks ago on friday, it has since become infected and swollen and anti biotics havent cure it. It still bleeds and seeps puss and its still painful. I still stuggle to walk freely. This should not be happening at all. My doctor has said i may need another op called excavating where they open the wound back up and remove any infection manually. If that is needed the Vegas is unlikely, that is what i need to know, and if that isnt done i need some other formation of medication that my doctor is unaware of.... Either way it doesnt look good.

I wouldn't have married my wife if she didnt change her name and she is both a doctor, well known and respected in her field and has just published and been quoted in parliament. she was more than happy to change her name and it certainly hasn't hurt her career in any way.

The wife isn't a problem, however the Kids must have my name. Anything other and for me it would be a major problem.
