Deadlift - 24 July 2008 11:39
Hi guys,

Currently on the routine that SL was doing in the forum topic "3 day split is magic"

Now yesterday afternoon i did deadlifts, first time ever, kept the weight low. start with 30 for a set and went to 40 for the next 4 sets...not much weight i know.

Apparently my form was very good and it felt right, looking at youtube vids etc my form was right but today my legs are killing me. my thighs are really burning.

Is this right? Does it not only do back (which doesn't hurt) but it does legs too....is it hurting cause it was my first time? (i sound like a virgin) LOL! sorry....

Any advice is welcome...if these hurt then SLDL tomorrow will kill me, lol!

depending on your form a big part of the initial drive comes from your legs. so feeling some doms there is to be expected to start with.

Your quads will be sore because on the downward phase they are working eccentrically (quads lengthening) and controlling the speed of the movement. Generally get greater soreness from eccentric training.

But great to hear that your adding DL to your program.

I need to get to my other gym, so i can start doing some deadlifts, cant wait. Did them about a yr ago but only a couple of times. Wanna have a right good crack at them now.
My current gym only has a smith machine, so cant do them their, and the gm with barbells at m other uni campus needs 2 of you in their at the same time so i need my mate to get back from home asap lol.

Deadlifts are one of the, if not THE bets all body exercise...so I'd expect to be hurting in my legs after I'd done it.

No pain, no gain after all

Just make sure your back day is a few days apart from your leg day

mixed grip is a choice it lets you grip heavier weights so you do not need straps try both, but i would go mixed as you are only as strong as your weakest part and thats likley to be grip
look forward and up a bit
think squat the weight up at the bottom not pull if that makes sence

Is it natural to have DOMS in my lower back for days after doing deadlifts? I done them on saturday, went for a gentle jog this evening and my back is still sore! I'm pretty new to deadlifts so only been doing them a few weeks. Hope the pain gets easier?

Ache is fine and expected for a few days after. It should subside as your body gets used to it. If you have a pain and it's consistent that is mroe likely to be injury.

I love the ache though.

I only get lower back doms when my form is sh1t tbh. Lifting with too much back and not enough legs and I suffer for days with really bad lower back DOMS.

When my form is spot on and the drive is coming from my legs, back straight (as it can be) then I get no back pain at all even when going heavy (heavy for me)

If you're suffering every week with lower back pain then I'd look at form to be sure this isn't an issue.

Too many people try and ego lift from the off without concentrating on form.
