Alot of my cardio is interval training on the Spin Bike. It's tough and you work at a high intensity intervaled with stamina and leg strength work. Your heart rate is fluctuating throughout. In the sprints you are working fast and flat out and in the hill climbs you wack on the resistance and go at a slower pace, you can feel every leg muscle working. I do quite a bit of aerobic cardio too. I have to do quite a lot of this sort of thing as part of my job. I used to run for two hours a day in the past but I ended up with a shin splint that developed into a stress fracture. I guess I've been lucky as it's the only injury I've ever had. (touch wood). I stopped running about 6 - 8 months ago to concentrate on gaining some muscle. I want to build muscle but I'm desperately missing the running. It was great just to get outside run for miles on my own and not have to think about anyone or anything. It really lifted my spirits. I still do loads of walking, as this doesn't eat into the muscle. I'm seriously thinking about introducing a bit of running back into my schedule though. It's difficult to know what to do, as I do want to gain some muscle mass. I had a place for the London Marathon this year, but I gave it to a friend so I could concentrate on my weights. I kind of regret this now. I really want to do both! What sort of cardio do you do dg?

I just realised I didn't actually answer your question properly. I do cardio most days with my job. I try to get one rest day if I can, but it's pretty manic, coz not only do I work for a Heath and Fitness Club I also instruct at the local Leisure Centre. I just checked out your profile dg, I see you are into Mountain Walking, me too. I did the Three Peaks Challenge, Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon in 24 hours. It took my team 20 hours to do it. Have you done it? I've climbed Mount Teide in Tenerife too. I definately want to do a bit more Mountain Walking.

11/2 Bulgarian Squats 30 kg x 8, 8, 7 Hack Squats 40kg x 7, 7, 50kg x 7 with straps Hanging leg Raises 2 x 10 Saxon Bends 5kg 2 x 10 I did this workout at 9pm after work and after insrtucting two classes again, which means I was feeling very tired. I forced myself to do it, as I was tempted to bottle out. I still find the hack squats one of the hardest and most awkward exercises I do. Hopefully they will get easier. I enjoy the burning sensation in the quads that the bulgarian squats produce, but then I am a bit strange! I particularly enjoy quad and tricep fatigue. I used straps for the last set of the Hack Squats, purely to see if I could lift a bit more weight, as my grip is crap. I'm going to start doing a bit of grip strength work again, I did some in my previous program.

I think your body gets used to it. My ex (at the moment) training partner Pikeking says I'm an Android, not human! I'm in Salisbury, so if you are ever around and want to come to an advanced, high intensity, killer Spin Class let me know. I teach a good one tonight at 7pm. The regulars who attend, are very fit so we just "go for it" and push ourselves to the edge. I'm buzzing afterwards, you feel great. We were fortunate enough to go to the top of Mount Teide. I felt on top of the World. One of my friends struggled with the altitiude, making her a bit breathless. The air was definately thinner, but I didn't notice too much of a difference. I really want to Climb Mount Kilamanjaro. That would be a proper challenge. I've checked out loads of charity events but there would be a lot of pressure to raise the £2000 min sponsership. In regard to the Three Peaks Challenge, our team drivers were great and very safe. I think they may of broken the speed limit from Scafell Pike to Snowdon though, as they took a wrong turning which made us lose time. We had originally hoped to do the challenge in 18 hours which would of been really legging it. I was happy with 20 hours 21 minutes. I wasn't too bothered as long as I finished it all. Must be great getting out on your mountain bike. I know I exercise a lot indoors due to my job, but given the choice I'd much rather be outdoors.

P.S. The Three Peaks soley under human power would be awesome. The travelling was the worst bit of the event. I had to keep stretching my legs in the mini bus coz you stiffen up between moutains. We had 9 people in our team so it was mega cramped. Two of them didn't do all three mountains. One got suspected hypothermia on Ben Nevis and couldn't string two words together. Quite Scarey. The other one was constantly sick after climbing Ben Nevis which was apparently due to dehydration. I felt so sorry for him as he had trained so hard for the challenge. He was so ill and almost in tears when he met the rest of us at the bottom of Snowdon. Hope you get to do your man power mountain challelnge dg. That would be so cool. Hope you get to do your

quote:
is a bit far, but stranger things have happened... But I think I've managed to track down classes in Reading actually. They're not listed on the website nor are they at the main council gym, but I think I've found them now... Tiede is amazing isn't it, I love the photos I took. The air is thinner up there for sure; when I was up there I, erm, ran around the paths until I nearly blacked out! Well I wanted to know what hypoxia felt like! Definitely try for Kilamanjaro. I suspect a lot of people pay the 'sponsorship' out of their own pockets but I think you'd find easier to get the sponsorhship than you imagine, working at two gyms - there's all your PT clients, the people who attend your classes; make a thing of it (posters in foyer etc) and I'm sure you'd get a fair amount of money. The ascent itself is a real experience - you start in jungle and end by a glacier! The more I think of doing the 3Ps under my own power the more it appeals! Don't think I'd set myself a time limit; just completing it would be challenge enough! I think you should consider getting a road bike if you don't have one already. Relatively low-impact, shouldn't interfere with gaining muscle and will help your legs along for sure! Salisbury Plain is great for cycling, quiet roads with big open views.

I do have a road bike, but I haven't used it for ages. It's a good idea of yours dg, I will definately get out and do some cycling across Salisbury plain, when the better weather arrives. Tiede is amazing. I've got some great photos too, taken above the clouds, it looks unreal. LMAO! at you running round the paths wanting to know what hypoxia felt like. Thats crazy dg. You are right about Kilamanjaro, I just need to make an effort to advertise the fact that I'm going to do it and raise the sponsorship money and if I don't raise it all, it would still be worth paying part of it out of my own pocket for the experience of a lifetime. Thanks for your ideas

dg basically I only do Bulgarian and Hack Squats becuase we don't have a squat rack at our gym only a Smiths Machine, which isn't great. Sometimes I do normal squats, but it is difficult to get enough weight on my shoulders and probably dangerous without a Squat Rack. I can't lift it off myself either. lol.

I do like doing normal squats. I teach "Body Pump" where you do lots of normal squats with a lighter weight but loads of reps. My butt and quads do get tortured what with one thing and another! Do you do squats dg?

I tend to do Bulgarian squats more as they're vaguely more sports-specific than back squats, they're a bit harder on the VMO (mine are naturally weak) and the stability-thing is cool. But I don't do legs much as cycling is hard on them and I don't want to over-train them, nor do legs on the same day as upper-body (which I squeeze in between rides and rest days). That said my legs lack out-right power (plus look rubbish!) so they need working!
Poor dg, I'm sure your legs don't look rubbish! We do have a leg press machine which I used in a training program a few months ago. I used to use the leg curl and leg extension machines alot before too, but I've been trying out a variety of new compound exercises to hopefully get better results.

Thankyou Rob. I wanted to do it again this year, but I couldn't get a team together. I definately want to do it again. I had the best time. I loved everything about it, the training walks at Lulworth Cove and the Breckon Beacons, bonding with my fellow team mates and the actual gruellling event of course. I was so high on adrenaline, I was buzzing for about two weeks afterwrds. Have you done it?
