We put an advert up in the gym, asking for people to write their name down if they were interested in participating in the challenge. Originally we had 65 names in January, when we started. After the first training session which involved running and walking, we were left with 30 people. We did training walks every Sunday, (tough ones) and gradually people dropped out untill we were left with 17 people. We entered two teams, one with 8 people and one with 9 (this is quite large for a team, I'd recommend 6 ideally). As I said before, we actually had 2 people who unfortunately couldn't climb all 3 mountains due to dehydration and hyperthermia. I still have great memories of it. The sun was shining and it was a hot June day when we began our ascent of Ben Nevis, by the time we reached the summit it was minus 4 and we walked through a snow field.

I thought you wanted to do it solely by Man Power dg???? I'd love to do that. It's probably too late to enter a team for the actual Three Peaks Challenge, entries need to be in by January I think. We live a bit far apart too train together too, but it's something worth considering in the future.

AD: Journal is looking good. I see your a fitness instructor - where do you work leisure centre/private health club? I am just in my last year of A-Levels and I want to be a fitness instructor for a year in a gym before I go to university. How did you get the qualifications to work in a gym out of interest? Are they hard/easy? Your diet looked good to me by the way - difficult to make suggestions as your needs are very different to mine.

Hi T-Bone, Thanks for your comments. I work for a large chain of Health and Fitness Clubs. (the only one that made a profit this year ) but I also do freelance work for the local Leisure Centre. I have gained my fitness qualifications over several years. Firstly, I did a 39 week Fitness Instructor Course with the AFOGB followed by a AFOGB Weight Training Course. Then I did some Aerobics and Step Instruction Courses with AFOGB and Future Fit. When the NVQ2 Qualification came into operation as a well recognised gym qualification I decided to also do this. I did City and Guilds NVQ2 Gymnasium Instructor and NVQ2 Exercise to Music Instructor. I did this two days a week at college for one year. This covered basic physiology and anatomy. The pass mark for the theory exam was 70% and I got 96% so I didn't find it too difficult, as I'm sure you wouldn't either. The practical assessments took place in a gym enviroment. Go for it T-Bone, it would give you an interesting job for a year until you go to Uni. I love my job so much. I get paid to keep fit and I meet loads of interesting people from all walks of life. (some pain in the arses too. lol). For me, I'm living my dream. I took a lengthy approach but if you want to qualify quickly you could try a condensed course such as those offered by Premier and Future Fit.

I just thought you turned up and 'did it'. Might even be an idea to do it a different weekend to avoid the crowds (unless there's a spirit of camaraderie with everyone doing it on the same day?). I'd like to think with my experience (something like 100 high-mountain walks, never kept a record, something I regret ) and current fitness that I wouldn't need to train that much though But like you say, just an idea
The official event is organised by the Fire Brigade and I have a medal to proove I finished it! There are about 100 teams who take part. You definately should of kept a record of your 100 high-mountain walks dg. That is such an amazing achievement!

Nah not really, I lived in Snowy for four years and was mountain walking about once a week for at least three of those years so it's probably a conservative estimate! To be honest I 'burned-out' and took up mountain biking instead. BTW when you were doing your first AFOGB instructor courses, were they full-time or did you have another job?
How cool, living in Snowy, that would be a dream come true for me. The course was suppossed to be full time, but it's the same as at Uni, you only have lectures for about 15 hours a week. I worked part time in a private health and fitness club as well.

Easy, go to Bangor University But when I tried to find a job up there after uni there wasn't much beyond bar-work and Tescos (seriously). So I moved down south when my money ran out. Hope to live there again some day though.

I haven't really done any other Mountain Walking as such, but I've done loads of long distance walking which included hill walking. I walked 40 miles in one day. I've also done quite a lot of Coast to Coast walking approx 20 miles a day for 5 days. Some of the cliff tops are very steep. I've done numerous Marathon Walks 26.2 miles, I did one which was from Avebury to Stonehenge in 5 1/2 hours, thats why I wanted to run the London Marathon this year, coz I thought if I can walk 26 miles in that time, I could definately run and walk it in a respectable time, even if I didn't manage to run it all. For the last two years I've participated in the Playtex Moonwalk where you walk 26.2 miles through London, starting at Midnight. Because it's to raise money for Breast Cancer Charities you wear a decorated bra! It's a great atmosphere, I intended to do it again this year, but didn't get my entry in on time. I have been mega disorganised this year. I've had a lot of work on etc and been too busy to get my act together. I definately want to do a lot more mountain walking though, hopefully I'll do some abroad as well. Have you climbed any other Mountains abroad then dg? When I lift I do it slow and controlled, 204 cadence. I have done some explosive stuff in the past. I change my routines alot, so may include some explosive work, I shall have to speak to my favourite Personal Trainer and ask him for some ideas.

Well Red Sirus, that would depend on the persons goals. I would recommend always doing the weight training first as the glycogen is utilised more efficiently. (I can't always practice what I preach unfortunately). I'd more than likely recommend the HIT cardio unless the person specifically wanted to lose weight then I'd say work at 70% to 75% of your MHR which is the fat burn zone, 60% would be an insufficient zone to stay in to effectively fat burn. Thanks for the question P.

I was always under the impression 60-70% was suffice for fat burning?? Yeah i agree on the carb supply issue, better to use them for max effort when weight training leaving fat easier to burn after when u do cardio. When cutting i only do 20-30min cardio in the morn on an empty stomach with maybe a clen or e/c/a - works great! Glycogen depleted then got the carbs in after the cardio. People at my gym do it a.rse about face lol

Yeah I've heard that empty stomach method works well when cutting, although there is some controversey about it. I think Rob had a post somewhere about that. There was a lot of varying oppinions. It obviously works for you which is the main thing, but what works for one person doesn't necessarily work for everyone. Think I might try it in the Spring tho.

I know what u are talkin about - its the whey arguement? Well i believe the whey will be used as the energy source for the cardio before the fat,so imo - not a good idea tbh Better bangin in the whey and carbs post cardio asap.
